ROUNDUP: Grizzlies cash in on mistakes, top Cowboys

Spring Valley took advantage of key Chaparral miscues Thursday night to rally for a 28-26 home victory over the Cowboys.

The Grizzlies used a pair of Chaparral turnovers and a bad snap on a punt in the second half to take control.

The Cowboys (1-1) led 19-14 at the half, but fumbled on their first possession of the second half. That set up a nine-play, 81-yard scoring drive, capped by a 10-yard TD pass from Brant Berglund to Christian Tasi that gave the Grizzlies (1-0) the lead for good.

Spring Valley was unable to take advantage of another Chaparral fumble, but did capitalize when a high snap on a punt gave the Grizzles the ball at the Cowboys 13.

Andre Bartley ran it in on the next play, and Landon LeBlue’s extra point pushed the lead to 28-19.

That turned out to be a key score, as the Cowboys marched 75 yards on 13 plays, capped by a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Jason Jonshon with about three minutes to play. Armando Zarate’s extra point was good to cut the lead to 28-26.

Chaparral had a final chance, getting the ball back after a punt with 52 seconds to play. The Cowboys picked up a first down, but the game ended on the third incomplete pass of the drive.

Chaparral’s Antonio Thomas was the story of the first half, rushing for 149 yards and three TDs on 12 carries. He had scoring runs of 30, 42 and 26 yards. But he never got going in the second half, finishing with 165 yards on 18 carries.

Jonshon added 76 yards on 18 carries for the Cowboys.

Berglund rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries, and completed 8 of 13 passes for 96 yards to pace Spring Valley.

Wells 21, Indian Springs 12 — At Wells, the Leopards used scoring runs of 40 and 82 yards and a 20-yard fumble return for a TD to beat the Thunderbirds (0-2).

Indian Springs quarterback Troy Heath had scoring runs of 2 and 4 yards in the second quarter to help the Thunderbirds pull within 14-12. He completed 9 of 17 passes for 126 yards.
