Roundup: Benjamin Sawaia helps Cougars grab first-round lead

Benjamin Sawaia carded a 1-over-par 73 at Mountain Falls on Thursday to help Coronado’s boys golf team grab the lead after the first round of the Pahrump Valley Invitational.

Ian Fritz added a 75 for the Cougars, who have a team score of 303 entering Friday’s final round.

Coronado’s second team is in second place at 304. Bellarmine (Calif.) is third at 307, and Bishop Gorman is fourth at 309.

Michael Sarro of Coronado’s second team and Foothill’s Noah MacFawn share the clubhouse lead at 70. Arbor View’s Hazen Newman and Palo Verde’s Michael Salerno each shot 71.

Sierra Vista’s Rashon Williams was 3-under through 15 holes and will finish his first round Friday morning.

Western’s Smith wins 9-hole match

Western’s Jared Smith carded a 2-over-par 38 at Las Vegas National to win a 9-hole match involving five teams.

The Warriors’ Patrick Tasanaroungrong was second with a 46, and Tech’s Jake Shelton and Virgin Valley’s Jeron Dalton tied for third at 50.

Tech was the only school to record a team score with a 273.
