SOCCER PLAY-INS: Cimarron boys, Palo Verde girls advance to state

Cimarron-Memorial’s boys and Palo Verde’s girls earned the final spots in the Division I state soccer tournaments by virtue of their wins in play-in matches Monday at Clark.

Eduardo Renteria’s 20-yard free kick just inside the goal post midway through the first half helped the Spartans to a 2-0 win over Foothill (19-5) in the boys match.

Garrick Quackenbush added a goal for Cimarron (16-4-2), which will face Valley in a state semifinal at 4 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park. Richard Crews made eight saves to earn the shutout for the Spartans.

Hannah Coleman’s 44-yard boot in the 20th minute of the second half accounted for all of the scoring in Palo Verde’s 1-0 win over Green Valley (16-6-4) in the girls match. Coleman’s shot looped underneath the cross bar, just out of the reach of Green Valley goalkeeper Kiyana Lopez.

Jordan Goyeau made four saves for the Panthers (15-4-4), who will face Coronado in a state semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park.
