NOTES: Skilled Subu scores league soccer honor
Coronado’s girls soccer team has had a tremendous season, posting a 16-1-2 record and reaching next week’s Southern Nevada championship game.
It’s hard to imagine the Cougars being nearly as strong without senior forward/midfielder Veronica Subu.
“She’s such a great leader for our team,” Coronado coach Dana Neel said. “She’s one of the most focused players I’ve ever coached.”
Subu’s focus not only helped Coronado win the Sunrise Region title, it also impressed league coaches who voted her the Southeast League Player of the Year.
Subu has 16 goals and eight assists this season.
“She’s got incredible knowledge of the game and knows how to motivate other players and use other people’s strengths to her advantage,” Neel said. “She’s willing to (pass the ball) to someone else as well for the sake of the team.”
Once this season, Neel said, Subu talked her out of giving the team a day off from practice.
“She said, 'We can’t take a day off, we have to keep working,’ ” Neel said. “She wants it so bad. This is her last shot at it, and she knows what needs to be done.”
Subu was one of four players honored by coaches as league player of the year.
Bishop Gorman’s Mariah Hobbs (Southwest), Valley’s Isa Almada-Leyva (Northeast) and Centennial’s Julie Owens (Northwest) took the other Player of the Year awards.
They also were named to the All-Southern Nevada team.
Coronado put four players on that team: Subu, Leticia Lopez, Addison Guida and Morgan Romito. Hobbs was joined by Gorman teammates Alex Holland, Megan Wasiak and Megan Brascia. Owens was joined by Centennial teammates Bethanie Skelton, Sophie Krauza and Ashley Mosley.
Rancho put four players on the team: Zakiya Bywaters, Jahmela Muhammad, Lexa Green and Rebecca Revo.
Other players making the All-Southern Nevada team were: Kelsey Tesoro, Brittney Esquivel and Ericka Haddock of Shadow Ridge; Kayla Varner, Kylie Lowe and Megan Brickley of Green Valley; Christen Parr, Katrine Baker and Darien Walker of Sierra Vista; Lea Rohan, Tatiana Garay and Jaimie Nelson of Las Vegas; Erica Peeples and Ashlea Andrade of Arbor View; Shelbi Spooner and Samantha Lewis of Silverado; Janie Bordinhao and Amanda Lopez of Durango; Chynna Hartmann and Alexis Sama of Eldorado; Taylor Reyes of Palo Verde; Nicole Givens of Basic; and Kylie Wassel of Bonanza.
Neel (Southeast), Shadow Ridge’s Harvey Robicheau (Northwest), Bishop Gorman’s Lora Feely (Southwest) and Rancho’s Sarah France (Northeast) were voted coaches of the year.
WHITE OUT AT ARBOR VIEW — Arbor View baseball coach Gary White said he retired Friday for “personal reasons.”
He had served as the Aggies’ coach since the school opened in 2005-06. White said former pitching coach Robert Salazar will take over as head coach.
