RECRUITING: Gators kicker draws interest

Most high school kickers looking to play college football are fortunate to land full scholarship offers as seniors, if at all.

Green Valley’s Nolan Kohorst has one as a junior.

UNLV made an offer to Kohorst on Nov. 12, and Boise State and Southern Utah have expressed interest.

“To get an offer as a junior for a kicker, that tells you a lot about the year he had,” Gators coach Matt Gerber said.

Kohorst hit four field goals this season from at least 50 yards out.

And the scary thing for the rest of the Southeast League?

“I think my leg’s getting stronger and my form’s getting better,” Kohorst said.

The 6-foot, 160-pound Kohorst could field more offers when he competes at the Chris Sailer Kicking Nike National Kicking and Snapping Event from Jan. 17 to 19 at UNLV.

Kohorst is part of a 2010 class that could include at least four Bishop Gorman prospects. Gorman defensive end Alex Turner said  UCLA and Oregon have indicated to him they will send written offers in the spring.

Gorman juniors already with offers are offensive guard Evan Palelei (Colorado) and tight end Xavier Grimble (UNLV), Gaels coach Bob Altshuler said. Offensive tackle Geoffrey Gibson also is considered a major prospect.

SENIOR VISITS — Palo Verde linebacker Liloa Nobriga said he plans to make an official visit to Utah on Friday after the Utes made an in-home visit Monday night. Colorado also is making a late push.

Lincoln County offensive tackle Cody Burgess said he officially will visit UNR on Monday. The 6-7, 270-pound Burgess said Stanford, Boise State and Southern Utah remain in the mix.

Cheyenne linebacker Damien Proby officially will visit Northwestern this weekend, Desert Shields coach Charles Anthony said.

PALO PROSPECTS ABOUND — In addition to Nobriga, at least three other Palo Verde football players soon could join teammate Torin Harris (Southern California) in orally committing.

Running backs Chaz Thomas and Sidney Hodge are drawing interest from UNLV, and tight end Alex Bonczyk could end up in the Ivy League, Panthers coach Darwin Rost said.

RECENT COMMITMENTS — Recent commitments or signings include Centennial soccer players Ashley Mosley (Central Michigan) and Julie Owens (UNLV), Centennial baseball players Anthony Consiglio (Dixie State) and Troy Hunter (Dixie State) and Bonanza bowler Hannah Chipman (McKendree, in Illinois).

KNIGHT SCOUTING AREA — Texas Tech men’s basketball coach Pat Knight and members of his staff attended Friday’s Lake Mead Holiday Classic boys basketball game between Lake Mead and Spring Mountain.

Per NCAA rules, Knight could not comment on specific players but confirmed he was scouting in the area.

Lake Mead coach Jeff Newton said Knight is interested in Eagles junior guard De’Quan Thompson, who has given an oral commitment to Division II Dixie State but would be free to sign elsewhere as a senior.
