VOLLEYBALL: Coronado wins first three matches in Durango Fall Classic
Coronado’s girls volleyball team will play in one of the top two brackets of the Durango Fall Classic tournament Saturday after winning all three of its matches Friday at Durango.
The Cougars were 25-10, 28-30, 25-22 winners over Newport Harbor (Calif.) to start the day, and followed that with a 20-25, 25-14, 25-19 victory over Notre Dame Belmont (Calif.) and a 25-20, 25-18 win over Faith Lutheran.
No other local team won a match in the tournament Friday as Arbor View, Centennial, Durango, Faith Lutheran, Foothill, Green Valley, Palo Verde and Shadow Ridge all went 0-3 against some of the nation’s toughest competition.
Coronado will open play Saturday against Torrey Pines (Calif.), ranked No. 2 nationally.
Spring Valley 3, Pahrump Valley 2 — At Pahrump, Jessica Rafay had 16 kills and 12 assists, and Danielle Amonica added 10 kills and 15 assists to help the Grizzlies to a 25-22, 19-25, 14-25, 25-22, 15-7 win over the Trojans.
Cashmere Buford notched eight digs for Spring Valley.
Alexis Trieb led Pahrump with 13 kills and five aces. Jill Smith added eight kills and 24 assists, and Koral Heart contributed eight kills for the Trojans.
Western 3, Clark 2 — At Clark, Destiny Gonzalez had 25 kills, eight aces and seven digs to lead the Warriors to a 25-19, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-4 win over the Chargers.
Nicole Riggs added four kills, 25 assists and nine digs, and Rachel Nunez had four kills and 11 digs for Western.
Angel Jamerson led Clark with four kills, 18 assists, six aces and five digs.
Alexandria Brown had seven kills, seven digs and two aces, Jasmyn Ozaki notched six kills and two blocks, and Lindsey Folkerts contributed four kills, three blocks and three digs for the Chargers.
Mojave 3, Cheyenne 0 — At Cheyenne, Leilani Limtiaco had 10 kills, seven digs and three aces, and Sua Estrada had 21 assists and four aces to lead the Rattlers to a 25-18, 25-15, 25-19 win over the Desert Shields.
Carissa Limtiaco had eight kills, eight digs and three aces, and Michelle Hernandez had 14 digs and two aces for Mojave.
Danaye Zaragoza had 16 assists, and Karina Toro had three kills and three aces for Cheyenne.
Lincoln County 0-2, The Meadows 2-1 — At The Meadows, Hannah Hafen combined for 16 kills as the Lynx split a double-header with the Mustangs, losing the first match 23-25, 13-25 before recovering for a 21-25, 25-17, 20-18 win.
Hafen had eight kills in each match and added two aces and two digs in the nightcap.
In the second match, Cameron Lloyd had six kills and 14 digs, and Chesnee Harding added 16 assists, three aces and seven digs for Lincoln County.
In the opener, Emily Ebel had seven assists and three aces, and Hannah Mulholland added four kills, eight digs, two aces and two assists for The Meadows. Amanda Hansen supplied 12 digs for the Mustangs.
In the finale, Dani Mason had seven kills, four blocks and four digs, and Alexi Corrigan added four kills and five digs for the Mustangs, who got 20 digs from Hansen.
Beaver Dam 3, Liberty Baptist 1 — At Littlefield, Ariz., the Diamondbacks were 25-19, 25-12, 20-25, 25-15 winners over the Eagles.
Beatty 3, Eureka 1 — At Beatty, the Hornets topped the Vandals, 25-21, 25-18, 17-25, 25-22.
