Updated Nevada Rubric numbers entering spring postseason play
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association uses the Nevada Rubric to determine alignment for Division I and Division I-A schools in Southern Nevada.
The rubric takes into account schools’ finishes in 20 sports in each of two seasons and assigns point values to those finishes. The point totals are used in a two-year cycle to determine the next two years’ alignment.
The next realignment will occur at the conclusion of the 2013-14 school year and will be effective for the 2014-15 season.
The NIAA’s Board of Control in April approved the movement of as many as two schools from the Division I Sunset Region and two schools from the Division I Sunrise Region to move to Division I-A.
Division I schools with fewer than 15 points in the rubric are subject to moving to Division I-A. If more than two schools have fewer than 15 points, the two schools with the fewest points would move and the remaining schools would stay in Division I.
In Division I-A, schools with more than 149 points are subject to move to Division I. Five schools (Boulder City, Moapa Valley, Virgin Valley, Faith Lutheran and Pahrump Valley) have the option to remain in Division I-A because of lower enrollment numbers.
Schools that remain in Division I will be realigned into leagues within their region with the teams finishing No. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 (if 11 teams remain) in their region in the rubric in one league, and the schools finishing Nos. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 (if 12 teams remain) in the other league. Division I-A schools are divided simply into a Sunrise and Sunset League.
Below are the current unofficial standings in the rubric entering the spring postseason. Schools can still gain points, and their standing can change. Rubric numbers will be made official by the NIAA after the state tournaments.
In baseball and softball, teams that qualified for the playoffs already earned 1-4 points, depending on how they finished in their league. Teams that are among their region’s final four in the double-elimination tournament have their total bumped to five points. Region runners-up earn 10, with the region champion earning 20. State runners-up earn 30 points, and the state champion gets a total of 40.
In boys golf, boys swimming, boys track, boys volleyball, girls swimming and girls track, no points have yet been awarded. Teams that finish second in their region get one point. Region champions earn three points. State runners-up get five points, and state team champions earn 10.
