DIVISION I-A SOFTBALL: Lesniak pitches Cowboys to opening-round win
Nicole Lesniak tossed a six-hitter and struck out 10 on Monday to help Chaparral’s softball team open the Division I-A Southern Region tournament with a 5-3 win over visiting Pahrump Valley.
Lesniak also went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and Lauren Lesniak was 2-for-2 with a double for the Cowboys (14-10), who will visit Faith Lutheran (18-11) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Taylor Cole and Sara Zinnecker doubled for the Trojans (14-16), who host Moapa Valley (12-13-1) in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Faith Lutheran 12, Moapa Valley 6 — At Faith Lutheran, Bri Yee went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the Crusaders past the Pirates.
Stacie Graham went the distance, striking out nine, to get the win.
Haley Nielson was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run for Moapa Valley, which also got a home run from Bailey Owens.
Cheyenne 14, Tech 3 — At Cheyenne, Megan Ingram went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored as the Desert Shields (19-12-1) routed the Roadrunners (15-16) in five innings.
Vanessa Sanders was 1-for-1 with three RBIs, and Alyssa Fata tossed a four-hitter for Cheyenne, which will visit Boulder City (26-7) at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Kimmie Rodriguez belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning for Tech, which will host Mojave (8-12) in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Boulder City 14, Mojave 1 — At Boulder City, Mikaela Brown threw a one-hitter and hit a two-run home run to lead the Eagles over the Rattlers in five innings.
Brown allowed an unearned run and struck out three for Boulder City, which scored seven runs in the bottom of the first.
