ROUNDUP: Lenardson’s two-out double helps Mustangs sweep Cougars, secure playoff bid

Nikkolle Lenardson hit a two-run double into the gap in right-center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game Friday as The Meadows’ softball team rallied to clinch a spot in the Class 2A Southern League playoffs by sweeping visiting Laughlin, 12-6 and 23-22.

The Cougars scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 22-20 lead, and the first two Meadows players struck out in the bottom of the inning before the Mustangs put together three straight singles to set up Lenardson’s big hit.

Noelle Young added a three-run homer in the second game for The Meadows.

The Meadows’ Robyn Monkarsh was 7-for-9 with a double, a triple and seven runs in the doubleheader.

Centennial 8, Rancho 4 — At Centennial, Bailie Nelson was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs, and the Bulldogs used a six-run third inning to down the Rams.

Savannah Horvath and Lauren Stroman each went 2-for-3 for Centennial.

McKinzi Vega was 3-for-4, and Devine Camberos went 2-for-4 for Rancho.

Moapa Valley 11-15, Virgin Valley 5-14 — At Overton, Hanna Leavitt scored on a passed ball with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning of the nightcap to lift the Pirates to a doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored three runs to take a 14-11 lead into the bottom of the eighth, but Hailey Neilson laced a two-run double to bring Moapa Valley within one.

Leavitt followed with a double, and Makenzie Frei drove in Nielson with an RBI single that moved Leavitt to third.

Cassidy Crandall was 2-for-5 with a double to lead Virgin Valley.

In the opener, Leavitt had a double and two runs scored as the Pirates scored five runs in the third and four in the fourth inning and cruised to the victory.

Summer Owens was 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs for Moapa Valley.

Crandall laced a double for the Bulldogs.  

Lincoln County 4-10, Needles 12-3 — At Panaca, K.C. McCrosky tossed a five-hitter and struck out nine in the nightcap to help the Lynx split a doubleheader with the Mustangs and earn the top seed for the Class 2A Southern League tournament.

Jaycee Wadsworth was 2-for-3 with a three-run homer, and Kaylee Teel went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Lincoln County in the nightcap.

Abby Chandler was 2-for-3 with a home run, and Melanie Merchain was 2-for-3 in the nightcap for Needles.

In the opener, Andrea Merchain homered twice, and Melanie Merchain added a homer to lead the Mustangs to the win. Taylor Lainhart was 2-for-4 for Needles.

Hatty Brown was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, and Teel homered for Lincoln County.

Pahranagat Valley 15-15, Sandy Valley 3-3 — At Sandy Valley, Kyla Mortensen was 4-for-5 with a three-run homer on the day to lead the Panthers to a pair of five-inning wins over the Sidewinders.

Mortensen went 3-for-3 with a home run in the opener, and tossed a three-hitter as the Panthers exploded for nine first-inning runs.

In the nightcap, Kennedy Huntsman earned the win with a three-hitter, and Randi Jones went 2-for-3.
