ROUNDUP: Pico spices up Legacy’s season with tourney championship
Sierra Pico tossed three shutouts Saturday to lead Legacy to the Colorado River Invitational softball tournament championship in Needles, Calif.
Pico threw a two-hitter with five strikeouts to help the Longhorns beat Boulder City, 7-0 in the championship game.
The sophomore also helped out at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, three runs and two RBIs. Alexis Fuller was 3-for-4 with a double, and Darcey Cochran went 3-for-5 for the Longhorns.
In the semifinals, Legacy scored twice in the second-inning to down Spring Creek, 2-0.
Jessie Wilhelm and Danielle Pick both scored on passed balls to account for the only runs of the game.
Pico spun a six-inning shutout, allowing two hits and striking out 11. Cochran went 2-for-3.
In the quarterfinals, Legacy beat Calvary Chapel, 7-0 in five innings.
Wilhelm went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs. Pico tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.
In seven games in the tournament, Legacy outscored its opposition 63-0. Pico pitched 37 innings, allowing nine hits and striking out 58.
Basic 1, Stansbury (Utah) 0 — At St. George, Utah, Lacey Romo tossed a six-inning two-hitter as Basic nipped Stansbury in the March Warm-Up.
Romo struck out 12 and allowed only one walk, as the Wolves made a first-inning run hold up.
Adrian Brown and Romo each singled in the first inning, and Brown scored the lone run on a throwing error.
Foothill 9, Rancho 2 — At St. George, Utah, Kylie Ishikawa went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and RBI to help the Falcons past the Rams.
Lauren Penska was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Foothill.
Alyxa Lamboo hit a two-run home run in the first inning for Rancho.
Cimarron-Memorial 5, Dixie (Utah) 1 — At St. George, Utah, Carrie Sheehan tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts as the Spartans stopped the Flyers.
Sheehan also went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Cimarron.
Madison Newhard was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Starlyn Thomas and Hannah Williams each went 2-for-4 for the Spartans. Williams also had an RBI.
Faith Lutheran 8, White Pine 5 — At Needles, Calif., Maya Barnes went 2-for-3 with a home run, three runs and three RBIs to help the Crusaders down White Pine in the Colorado River Invitational.
Rachel Kerr, Michele Beatty and Ashley Green each went 2-for-3 for Faith Lutheran.
Alex Hall slugged a home run for the Bobcats.
Stansbury (Utah) 6, Eldorado 0 — At St. George, Utah, Stansbury blanked the Sundevils in a pool-play game of the March Warm-Up.
Eldorado 7, Provo (Utah) 0 — At St. George, Utah, Ashley Jarzombek spun a five-inning two-hitter with five strikeouts to lift the Sundevils past the Bulldogs.
Taylor Schroeder and Gabriella Trillo each went 2-for-3 and scored twice for Eldorado. Schroeder also had two RBIs.
Clark 4, Box Elder (Utah) 3 — At St. George, Sydney Staresinich’s three-run home run in the first inning sparked the Chargers to the win.
Jasmine Fukuda was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and Anna Jaehn went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Clark.
