SOFTBALL: Foley strikes out nine in season debut

Mosie Foley tossed a five-inning four-hitter and struck out nine Thursday to help Faith Lutheran’s softball team to a 7-0 win over host Needles at the Colorado River Invitational in Needles, Calif.

Alex Wright was 2-for-3 for Faith Lutheran.

Faith Lutheran 8, Spring Creek 0 — At Needles, Calif., Lili Bonora went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and the Crusaders used a six-run second inning to rout the Spartans in a four-inning game in the Colorado River Invitational.

Wright was 2-for-2 for Faith Lutheran.

Foley and Lauren Beatty combined on a one-hitter.

Mission Viejo (Calif.) 7, Foothill 0 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Sarah Maddox and RaeAnn Brems each went 1-for-2 with a double, but the Falcons fell to the Diablos in the Tournament of Champions.

Foothill 11, Cactus (Ariz.) 7 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Maddox hit a walk-off grand slam and had six RBIs to lift the Falcons over the Cobras in the Tournament of Champions.

Jordan Corn and Kelsey McFarland each added a double for Foothill, which led 7-1 after four innings before giving up seven runs in the last three innings.

Arbor View 4, Coronado 3 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Marissa Bachman’s solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 3-3 tie and lifted the Aggies by the Cougars in the Tournament of Champions.

Bachman went 2-for-3 with a double and the home run, and Taylor Thomas added a two-run homer for Arbor View.

Katie Dawson had a two-run homer for Coronado. Danielle Amato was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Basia Query went 3-for-4 for the Cougars.

Copper Hills (Utah) 5, Coronado 3 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Copper Hills built a 5-0 lead after four innings and held off the Cougars in the Tournament of Champions.

Jaiden Johnson was 2-for-3 for Coronado.

Lakewood (Calif.) 7, Centennial 5 — At Bullhead City, Ariz., Lakewood scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to top the Bulldogs in the Tournament of Champions.

Heather Bowen was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs for Centennial, and teammate Savannah Horvath also homered.

Cheyenne 11, Virgin Valley 1 — At Cheyenne, Alyssa Fata tossed a five-inning two-hitter and struck out 11 to lead the Desert Shields by the Bulldogs.

Fata also went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Brittany Leeds was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for Cheyenne.

Kylie Clark was 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Courtney Gain went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Desert Shields.

Valley 14, Del Sol 3 — At Valley, Kristina Manthei tossed a five-inning two-hitter with 11 strikeouts to lead the Vikings by the Dragons.

Monique Beaudry went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Valley.

Shannon Williams homered for the Vikings.

Legacy 13, White Pine 1 — At Needles, Calif., Gabby Rinker was 3-for-3 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs as the Longhorns routed the Bobcats in a three-inning game in the Colorado River Invitational.

Alyssa Sotelo was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and an RBI for Legacy.

Barstow (Calif.) 3, Legacy 2 — At Needles, Calif., Barstow scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to nip the Longhorns in the Colorado River Invitational.

Kiana Elia singled and drove in a run for Legacy. Longhorns pitchers Haley Pedersen tossed a three-hitter.

Bishop Gorman 14, Jefferson (Texas) 0 — At Gorman, Shelby Estocado was 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, six RBIs and four runs to help the Gaels to the four-inning win in the Kick off the Season Tournament.

Dayton Yingling was 3-for-4 with a triple, a homer and three RBIs and also threw three shutout innings to earn the win.

Bishop Gorman 10, Chaparral 0 — At Gorman, Casey Nelson fired a no-hitter as the Gaels defeated the Cowboys in four innings.

Nelson struck out eight, walked one and went 2-for-2 with two runs.

Tori Douglas was 2-for-3 with two runs for Gorman.
