SOFTBALL: Rams squeeze out win in California tournament
Jahnae Davis-Houston scored on Jacey Kelley-Gonzalez’s safety squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to lift Rancho’s softball team to a 1-0 win over Mission Oak (Calif.) in the Washington Union Invitational at Fresno, Calif.
Davis-Houston started the eighth on second base under international tiebreaker rules. She moved to third on a sacrifice fielder’s choice before scoring when the Hawks threw out Kelley-Gonzalez on the bunt.
Rancho’s Samantha Pochop tossed a one-hitter and struck out 16.
Rancho 5, Pacheco (Calif.) 1 — At Fresno, Calif., Pochop fired her second straight one-hitter and struck out 12 in the Rams’ win over the Panthers in the Washington Union Invitational.
Pochop was 3-for-3, and Sissy Lupton went 2-for-2 for Rancho, which broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Pahrump Valley 18-15, Desert Pines 1-1 — At Pahrump, Lani Kaiwi and Sidney Keis combined on a one-hitter in the nightcap as the Trojans swept a pair of five-inning games from the Jaguars.
Aaliya Ward and Kaiwi each had a double and a triple in the second game.
The Trojans used a seven-run first inning and a 10-run third in the opener to pull away and scored nine runs in the second inning of the finale.
Centennial 11, Coronado 4 — At Torrance, Calif., Stephanie Day had three hits and two RBIs to lead the Bulldogs by the Cougars in six innings in the Torrance National Tournament.
Hannah Jones added three hits for Centennial, which got a four-hitter from Jennifer Cerrone.
Alexis Okamura had a hit and two RBIs to lead Coronado.
Bishop’s School (Calif.) 10, Mountain View 5 — At Mountain View, the Knights topped the Saints in five innings in the Spring Slam.
Rose Adkins was 1-for-2 with two RBIs, and Savannah Alley was 1-for-1 with a double for Mountain View.
