SOFTBALL: Tomlinson, Palo Verde hang on after five-run first
Kali Tomlinson’s two-run home run keyed a five-run first inning Thursday as host Palo Verde’s softball team held on to defeat Shadow Ridge, 5-4.
Taylor Askland tossed a six-hitter and struck out six for the Panthers.
Shae Clements and Alisha Schultz both went 2-for-3 for the Mustangs, who scored twice in the top of the seventh.
Shelbi Denman struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings of relief for Shadow Ridge.
Desert Oasis 8, Green Valley 7 — At Green Valley, Holly Severance got the final two outs to shut down a seventh-inning rally as the Diamondbacks held on to nip the Gators.
The tying run was at first when Severance got the final out on pop up to third base.
Elsy Guzman went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and winning pitcher Paisley Garcia was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Desert Oasis.
Samantha Loving went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Alexa Blazek was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Green Valley.
Centennial 8, Arbor View 1 — At Centennial, Deanna Barrera threw a three-hitter and struck out eight as the Bulldogs downed the Aggies.
Ava Dolan was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and Lina Barrera went 3-for-3 for Centennial. Stephanie Day was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Centennial.
Terren Vinson was 2-for-4 for Arbor View.
Spring Valley 8, Faith Lutheran 1 — At Spring Valley, Michaela Hood tossed a five-hitter and had nine strikeouts to lead the Grizzlies past the Crusaders.
Hood went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and Maria Ward also tripled for the Grizzlies.
Stephanie Huff doubled and drove in a run for Spring Valley.
Cimarron-Memorial 10, Legacy 0 — At Cimarron, Tiarra Del Rosario went 5-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs as the Spartans blanked the Longhorns in six innings.
Rosie Del Rosario spun a two-hitter and struck out seven for Cimarron.
Sumiko Tipton went 2-for-3, and Cierra Davis was 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Cimarron.
Durango 14, Bonanza 1 — At Durango, Alexis Geraldo went 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and four RBIs as the Trailblazers routed the Bengals in five innings.
Winning pitcher Trinity Valentine went 2-for-2 with a double, three runs and two RBIs and tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Kaitlyn O’Hearn was 2-for-3 with two runs for Durango.
Mojave 19, Clark 6 — At Mojave, Jesika Smith and Ariel Wilson combined on a one-hitter to lead the Rattlers by the Chargers in five innings.
Sarah Mercado had three hits for Mojave, which scored nine runs in the second inning.
Rancho 3, Taft (Calif.) 0 — At Fresno, California, Samantha Pochop tossed a two-hitter and struck out 16 as the Rams blanked the Wildcats in the Washington Union Invitational.
Pochop faced only two batters more than the minimum.
Sammi Llamas hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Rancho to break a scoreless tie.
Rancho 8, Union Mine (Calif.) 1 — At Fresno, California, Lily Gutierrez and Pochop combined on a two-hitter as the Rams topped the Diamondbacks in the Washington Union Invitational.
Pochop threw 5 2/3 innings of hitless relief and struck out 10 of the 18 batters she faced.
Jahnae Davis-Houston went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double and an RBI for Rancho. Yvette Sanchez was 2-for-3, and Katerina Anthony was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Rams.
Bishop Gorman 13, Trinity (Pa.) 3 — At Gorman, Sierra Dias went 2-for-3 with a triple and six RBIs as the Gaels downed the Hillers in five innings.
Ashley Witucki went 3-for-3 with a double and four runs scored for the Gaels.
Indian Springs 23, Mountain View 8 — At Mountain View, Aspen Avery had two hits, including a double, to help the Thunderbirds down the Saints in five innings.
Holly Kessler had two hits for Mountain View.
Western 14, Cheyenne 2 — At Cheyenne, the Warriors defeated the Desert Shields in five innings.
