SOFTBALL: Tomlinson’s slam propels Panthers at Tournament of Champions
Kali Tomlinson’s grand slam capped a five-run top of the fourth inning Friday as Palo Verde’s softball team edged Bryan (Texas) 6-5 in four innings in the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Arizona.
Bryan took a 5-1 lead into the fourth inning, but McKenzie Ryan homered to pull the Panthers within 5-2, and Tomlinson’s slam gave Palo Verde its first lead of the game.
Taylor Askland pitched a scoreless fourth inning, and the game was called due to a time limit.
Los Alamitos (Calif.) 4, Palo Verde 0 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Ryan Denhart spun a five-inning two-hitter to lead the Griffins by the Panthers in the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions.
Caitlin Ladd was 2-for-3 with a home run for Los Alamitos.
Coronado 14, Centennial 7 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Brooke Younie’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run bottom of the fourth inning as the Cougars rallied by the Bulldogs in four innings in the Tournament of Champions.
Tatum Spangler and Dylan Underwood each went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs for Coronado, which led 6-0 after three innings.
Centennial, which had just five hits, scored seven runs in the top of the fourth before the Cougars fought back and ended the game on a tournament run rule. Jaiden Johnson was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs for Coronado.
Coronado 4, Aztec (N.M.) 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Jillian James tossed a six-inning one-hitter and struck out four to lead the Cougars by the Tigers in the Tournament of Champions.
Johnson was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI for Coronado.
Centennial 9, River Valley (Ariz.) 2 — At Bullhead City, Arizona, Ava Dolan went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and two RBIs to lead the Bulldogs by the Dust Devils in the Tournament of Champions.
Skyler Ball and Lina Barrera each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Centennial.
Clovis (Calif.) 2, Bishop Gorman 1 — At Gorman, the Cougars scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to nip the Gaels in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.
Monique Passalacqua was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for Gorman.
Faith Lutheran 14, Chino Valley (Ariz.) 0 — At Needles, California, Haley Jack went 3-for-3 with an RBI and allowed just three hits and struck out six as the Crusaders routed the Cougars in three innings in the Colorado River Invitational.
Samantha Jack was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs, and Claire Peck went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for Faith Lutheran.
Erin Gilchrist was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, and Ellie Fried and Ryleigh Gilchrist each went 2-for-2 for the Crusaders.
Faith Lutheran 14, Williams (Ariz.) 0 — At Needles, California, Fried was 3-for-3 with a home run, three runs and two RBIs, and the Crusaders scored 10 second-inning runs on their way to a rout of the Vikings in four innings in the Colorado River Invitational.
Samantha Jack was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and Haley Jack went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Faith Lutheran. Peck went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Kristen Blackmon was 1-for-3 with three RBIs for the Crusaders.
Haley Jack allowed four hits and a walk and struck out four in four innings.
Legacy 8, White Pine 4 — At Needles, California, Alyssa Sotelo was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to help the Longhorns top the Bobcats in five innings in the Colorado River Invitational.
Braelin Brockway was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Alyssa Spencer went 2-for-3 with a double for Legacy. Melissa Martinez was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Longhorns.
Legacy 22, Mountain View 0 — At Needles, California, Sotelo went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs, and Clarissa Lona was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs as the Longhorns routed the Saints in four innings in the Colorado River Invitational.
Legacy had 12 players score and took advantage of 18 walks.
Amanda Sink and Kellie Nelson combined on a two-hitter and struck out nine for Legacy.
Silverado 6, Boulder City 4 — At Needles, California, Alessandra Ponce was 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Skyhawks over the Eagles in the Colorado River Invitational.
Charlene Masterson homered for Boulder City.
Silverado 13, Sunrise Mountain 1 — At Needles, California, Ponce was 2-for-4 with a home run to lead the Skyhawks to the five-inning win in the Colroado River Invitational.
Megan Johnson hit two triples, and Alexa Ostolaza had two doubles for Silverado.
Arbor View 9, Douglas 2 — At Doc Romeo Park, Nekea Easterling was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead the Aggies over the Tigers in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.
Brittany Henricksen went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Arbor View, which used a seven-run fourth inning to pull away.
Clovis (Calif.) 4, Arbor View 0 — At Bishop Gorman, Danielle Lung threw a six-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead the Cougars over the Aggies in the Kick Off the Season Tournament.
Emily Puente had a solo homer in the second inning to put Clovis on top for good.
Arbor View’s Breanne Henricksen and Kayla Rutledge combined on a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
Green Valley 11, West Jordan (Utah) 3 — At St. George, Utah, Tyre Hilton was 3-for-5 with two triples, a homer and three RBIs to lead the Gators to the win in the March Warm-Up Tournament.
Green Valley 13, Viewmont (Calif.) 4 — At St. George, Utah, Isabel Herrera was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Gators to the win in the March Warm-Up Tournament.
Sam Loving went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Green Valley.
Green Valley 11, Weber (Utah) 0 — At St. George, Utah, Loving was 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs to lead the Gators to the six-inning win in the March Warm-Up.
Loving also threw a five-hitter with eight strikeouts to get the win.
Allie Lamb went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Green Valley.
Western 18, Agassi Prep 7 — At Western, Alexis Moeaki went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double as the Warriors routed the Stars in five innings.
Jennessa Dunton was 2-for-4 with two doubles, and Ellyson Reynada went 2-for-2 with a triple for Western. Ashley Rodriguez was 2-for-2 for the Warriors.
Khadeejah Griffin’s double was Agassi Prep’s lone hit.
Pahranagat Valley 14, Beaver Dam 0 — At Alamo, Madalyn Taylor hit a grand slam in a nine-run first inning as the Panthers eased past the Diamondbacks in five innings at the Pahranagat Valley Invitational.
Kaitlyn Davis tossed a five-inning one-hitter and struck out seven for Pahranagat Valley.
Pahranagat Valley 12, Eureka 2 — At Alamo, Ashlyn Wadsworth and Davis each had two triples as the Panthers routed the Vandals in five innings in the Pahranagat Valley Invitational.
Allyse Frehner added a triple and two RBIs for Pahranagat Valley.
Annette Hayward was 2-for-3 with a double for Eureka.
Laughlin 17, Tonopah 6 — At Laughlin, Brittany Schelper had a three-run home run and a triple to lead the Cougars by the Muckers in five innings in the Cougar Classic.
