3A Southern Region: Eagles’ Mikkelson twins sweep singles titles
Boulder City’s Wonder Twins put on a power display on their home court Friday.
As Olivia Mikkelson was wrapping up her Class 3A Southern Region girls singles title on one court, twin brother Connor was gutting his way to a three-set win in the boys singles final on another.
Now the juniors will chase a dream of winning a pair of state championships.
Defending Class 3A state champion Olivia Mikkelson outlasted top-seeded Lindsey Hofflander of The Meadows, 6-3, 7-5 in the girls singles final.
In the boys final, Connor recovered after losing the second set to knock off top-seeded Rua Elmore of Western, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Connor will try to become the Eagles’ first state champion in boys singles since Paul Eckert in 1977.
The top four finishers in all four flights advance to the state tournament, which begins Thursday in Truckee, California.
The Mikkelsons weren’t the only champions from Boulder City on Friday.
Boen Huxford and Preston Jorgensen cruised to victory in the boys doubles final, downing teammates Ty Pendleton and Karsen Bailey, 6-3, 6-3.
In the girls doubles final, Meadows’ Grace Nemec and Peyton Barsel defeated teammates Allison Stone and Nishele Phansalkar-Michalak, 6-4, 6-1.
Moapa Valley’s Chase Hadley defeated Boulder City’s Breton Erlanger in the boys singles third-place match. Hadley led 6-4, 5-5 when Erlanger retired.
