ROUNDUP: Centennial boys bounce Bonanza, advance to Sunset semifinals

Centennial boys tennis coach Mike Livreri scrambled his lineup for Tuesday’s Sunset Region quarterfinal against Bonanza.

The Bulldogs moved two of their established singles players to separate doubles teams in an effort to spread out their talent.

Livreri couldn’t help but shake his head and laugh when Centennial’s two clinching wins came from his lone remaining established singles player and a doubles team that had been together all year.

Freshman Lucas Lee and the doubles team of Josh Arias and Brandon Fish won sets minutes apart in the third round, helping Centennial (10-2) eliminate the defending state champion Bengals, 11-7.

“Maybe some guys just needed a little shake up, a little pressure taken off of them,” said Livreri, who moved J.C. Pauli and Travis Beck to doubles Tuesday.

Centennial won two of the first three completed matches of the third round to take an 8-7 lead with three matches still on court, including a doubles match that eventually went to a tiebreaker.

Arias and Fish cemented a 6-4 win over Bonanza’s Jared Hyer and Reed Thuett to put Centennial up 9-7.

Lee beat Bonanza’s Trevor Jacobsen 6-4 to clinch the win.

“Of course I feel pressure when I go out there,” said Lee, who won two of his three matches. “But I just went out and hit my shots.”

Centennial won seven of the nine doubles sets, with Patrick Bolton and Beck going 3-0, Pauli and Tyler Gietzen 2-1 and Arias and Fish 2-1.
