ROUNDUP: Doubles dominance carries Foothill into Sunrise final

Danny Dion and Kevin Dion went 3-0 in doubles, and host Foothill nipped Silverado 10-9 in a Sunrise Region boys tennis semifinal Tuesday.

The Falcons (10-1) advanced to the Sunrise final against Coronado (11-2) at 3 p.m. Friday at Darling Tennis Center.

“We’ve never been in this spot before,” Foothill coach Mark Richards said. “I have four seniors who have been here four years, and they’re just ecstatic.”

David Witt and Nick Gegen were 2-1 in doubles for Foothill, which won a tiebreaker 4-2 to clinch the match victory.

Devon Morrissey and Dillon McNamara each went 3-0 in singles for the Skyhawks. Justin Estell and Todd Vincent went 2-1 in doubles.

Coronado 14, Green Valley 4 — At Coronado, the Cougars had three doubles teams go 2-0 as the defending region champions advanced.

The teams of Adam Gratz and Michael Seitz, Jordan Fenn and Xavier Smith and Colton Pate and Brian Foley each went 2-0.

Coronado won eight of nine doubles sets.

Green Valley’s Evan Song went 3-0 in singles.

SUNSET REGION

Bonanza 12, Centennial 6 — At Bonanza, Tommy Lettero was 3-0 in singles as the Bengals (11-0) defeated Centennial to set up a rematch with Palo Verde (13-0) for the Sunset crown.

Bonanza and Palo Verde, who have combined to win the last seven state titles, will meet at 3 p.m. Friday at Darling Tennis Center.

Bonanza’s doubles teams of Laurent Gontier and Sean Lettero, Aashish Daulat and Nathan Tanner and Andrew Whiting and Craig Whiting each went 3-0.

Centennial’s Travis Beck and Trevor Newman were 2-1 in singles. 

Palo Verde 15, Bishop Gorman 3 — At Palo Verde, the Panthers swept the singles en route to winning their 55th consecutive dual match.

Brandon Parker, Fernando Sunago and Stan Breland each went 3-0 for Palo Verde.

Josh Levinson and Dillon Berkabile were 3-0 in doubles for Palo Verde, which has won the last two state titles and three of the last four.

The two region champions will advance to the state tournament, Oct. 23 and 24 in Carson City.
