ROUNDUP: Gomez, Javier help Gorman boys to quarterfinal win
Chris Gomez and Joey Javier made the most of a rare opportunity to start Saturday.
The Bishop Gorman duo went 3-0 in doubles to help the Gaels to a 13-5 win at Shadow Ridge in the opening round of the Sunset Region boys tennis tournament.
The Gaels (11-2) will visit defending state champion Palo Verde (12-0) in the semifinals Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Gomez and Javier have seen spot varsity action this year but got the nod to play three sets Saturday against the Mustangs as Gorman had to shuffle its lineup because of illness.
The Gaels won eight of the nine doubles sets.
“We were dominant in the first two rounds today,” Gorman coach Craig Witcher said.
Alec Thomas and Kyle Del Rosario were 3-0 in doubles for Gorman. Diego Gutierrez and Ryan Hidajat went 2-0 in doubles. Andrew Rapahelson was 3-0 in singles.
Palo Verde 15, Clark 3 — At Palo Verde, David Nichols and Kamau Jackson went 3-0 in doubles to help the Panthers win their 54th consecutive dual match.
Stan Breland and Fernando Sunago went 2-0 in singles for Palo Verde, which was without No. 1 singles player Brandon Parker because of illness.
Bonanza 16, Arbor View 2 — At Bonanza, the Bengals (10-0) swept the doubles sets en route to an easy win over the Aggies, who had only six players.
The doubles teams of Sean Lettero and Laurent Gontier, and Aashish Daulat and Nathan Tanner each went 3-0. Tommy Lettero was 3-0 in singles.
The Bengals will host Centennial (11-2) at 3 p.m Tuesday.
Neil Andersen went 2-1 in singles for the Aggies.
Centennial 13, Sierra Vista 5 — At Centennial, the doubles teams of Kyle Johnson and Tyler Gietzen, and Josh Arias and Tyler Rogers each went 3-0 to help the Bulldogs eliminate the Mountain Lions.
Travis Beck and Austin Howell each went 2-1 in singles for Centennial. Patrick Bolton and Brandon Fish were 2-1 in doubles.
Zach Wardle went 3-0 in singles for Sierra Vista.
In the Sunrise Region boys tournament:
Foothill 13, Canyon Springs 5 — At Foothill, three doubles teams went 2-0, and the Falcons (10-1) took a 9-3 lead after two rounds en route to the win.
Danny Dion and Kevin Dion went 2-0 in doubles for Foothill, as did the teams of David Witt and Nick Gegen, and Cody Souza and Evan Roquemore.
Foothill will face Eldorado or Silverado in the semifinals.
Josh Jones went 3-0 in singles for Canyon Springs, which had only six players.
Coronado 18, Valley 0 — At Coronado, Matthew Dees and Matt Gapultos each went 3-0 in singles to lead a Cougars sweep.
Jordan Fenn and Xavier Smith went 3-0 in doubles for Coronado (10-2), which will host Rancho or Green Valley in a semifinal match Tuesday.
