GIRLS REGIONALS: Bonanza closes strong, subdues Faith Lutheran
After entering the final round tied with Faith Lutheran, Bonanza’s girls tennis team needed someone to step up Tuesday.
That turned out to be nearly everyone.
Bonanza scored five of the six points in the third round on its way to an 11-7 home victory over Faith Lutheran in a Sunset Region quarterfinal. The Bengals (9-1) will play at Palo Verde (11-0) in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“It means that they like to make things stressful,” Bonanza coach Lindsay Powers said with a laugh when asked about the final round. “It just proves the kind of team that this is. They work together, and they were talking to each other between matches, giving each other pointers so they could finish strong.”
The match was suspended due to rain on Monday, with the score tied 3-3.
Freshman Brenda Aguilar played a key role in the Bengals’ first playoff win since 2008.
Aguilar went 3-0 in singles, including a 6-2 victory over Faith Lutheran’s No. 1 singles player, Renee Vogel, in the final round to give the Bengals their 10th point and clinch the team win.
“I was really nervous. (Vogel) was playing well, I was playing well, and it was head-to-head,” Aguilar said.
Bonanza dominated the final round, with Alison Matlovic winning 6-0 and Adriane Millow winning 7-5 in singles. The doubles teams of Julie Speraw and Lauren Smith won 6-1, and Madeline Sutton and Taylor Gordy-Prescott won 6-2.
Matlovic and Millow went 2-1 in singles. Speraw and Smith, and Sutton and Gordy-Prescott were 2-1 in doubles.
“It’s very exciting,” Powers said. “They’ve worked together for a while, and a lot of these girls are seniors, so it’s huge for them. They haven’t made it this far in a long time, so I’m proud of them.”
Rachel Tabor and Callie Meinhardt went 3-0 in doubles to lead Faith Lutheran (9-4). Vogel was 2-1 in singles for the Crusaders.
