Postseason picture far from clear in girls tennis

But the postseason picture is far from clear.

None of the leagues in the Sunset or Sunrise Region has all four of its postseason berths decided. As many as 20 teams remain alive for the 16 postseason berths.

The girls team tournament begins Monday with the top two teams in each of the four leagues hosting a first-round match.

The Northwest League is the least confusing of the four with Palo Verde (8-0) and The Meadows (8-0) having locked up the top two spots. The teams play each other Thursday at The Meadows with the winner taking the top seed and the loser being seeded second.

Faith Lutheran (6-2) has clinched the No. 3 seed.

Arbor View (5-3) defeated Centennial on Wednesday to claim the No. 4 seed.

In the Southwest League, Bishop Gorman (6-0) is in the driver’s seat and could still get the No. 1 seed even if it loses to Durango (5-1) on Thursday.

Bonanza (5-1) is also in and will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed.

The fourth spot is up for grabs between Clark (3-3) and Sierra Vista (2-4), which meet at Sierra Vista on Thursday. If Clark wins, the Chargers are in.

If Spring Valley loses its match against Desert Oasis and Sierra Vista beats Clark, the Mountain Lions are in.

But, if Spring Valley and Sierra Vista win, it creates a three-way tie at 3-4 that Clark wins if it scores eight points against Sierra Vista. If the Mountain Lions get at least 11 points in the match, Sierra Vista is in and Clark is out.

How’s that for confusing?

In the Northeast League, the top three seeds have been decided.

Las Vegas (6-0) is the top seed, followed by Eldorado (5-1) and Canyon Springs (4-2).

The fourth seed could be claimed by any of three teams — Moapa Valley (3-3), Valley (3-3) and Chaparral (2-4).

Valley controls its own destiny and will claim the No. 4 seed if it beats Chaparral in a home match Thursday.

If the Vikings lose, Moapa can claim the spot with a win against Eldorado.

Chaparral must win and have Moapa Valley lose to Eldorado to even have a shot at getting in.

In the Southeast, Silverado (7-0) holds the top spot but still must play Green Valley (6-1). If the Skyhawks beat Green Valley, they’re the top seed.

If Silverado loses, Coronado (6-1) could claim the top seed via a three-way tie with a win over Tech. Green Valley still could take the top seed with a win, but would need to score at least 14 points in the match against Silverado.

Under any scenario, Silverado, Coronado and Green Valley will, in some order,  be the top three seeds.

The fourth team will be the winner of Thursday’s Liberty (4-3) at Basic (4-3) match.

The region semifinals are Oct. 8, also at home sites, with the region championships scheduled for Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Darling Tennis Center.
