Jackson, Carter propel Silverado to Skyhawk Invitational boys title

Ladale Jackson and Dante Carter gave Silverado’s boys track team something it had lacked in past seasons.
A meet title in the Skyhawks’ own invitational.
Jackson and Carter, named co-Male Athletes of the Meet, each won two events Saturday, and Silverado piled up 109½ points to capture the 23-team Skyhawk Invitational.
Arbor View took second with 88 points.
“It feels good to win our own meet again,” Silverado boys coach Jerry Oliver said. “It’s been about four years, but I think it’s a good sign that we’re a contender this year for the region and state.”
Jackson captured the 400 meters in 49.88 seconds and followed it up with a win in the 200 in 22.06.
Jackson, the defending state champion in the 400, narrowly held off Arbor View’s Vaughn Davis (50.1) and Foothill’s James Henderson (50.12).
“It’s going to be us three all the way through state,” Jackson said. “This is a preview of what you’ll see, 1-2-3.”
With Jackson handling two of the sprint events, Carter took care of the distance races.
Carter took the 1,600 in 4:29.25, a little more than a second faster than Arbor View’s Greg Marschik.
And despite losing track of his laps, Carter ran away with the 3,200, finishing in 9:55.11. Foothill’s Carl Greene was second in 10:05.72.
“I wanted to move at the 600,” Carter said. “I thought that was the 600. It was the 1000. When I came around, they held up a 2 (and I thought), ‘Why are you holding up 2?’ I had two more laps.
“I made a dumb move for a while, but it worked out all right.”
Palo Verde’s girls made a strong comeback in the final two races — the 3,200 and the 1,600 relay — to upend Coronado for the team title.
Palo Verde, which picked up 22 points in the final two races, had 76.33 points to the Cougars’ 71.
The Panthers’ Katie Gorczyca set a meet record en route to winning the 3,200 in 11:23.96. Teammate Marissa Suan took second in 11:55.08.
“I really wanted to break 11:20, but I was able to get a meet record, so I’m happy about that,” Gorczyca said. “I know my pace, and I knew we were going out a little bit fast, but I felt good.”
Canyon Springs’ Jamila Pullum took Female Athlete of the Meet honors, winning the 200 and 400 and helping pair of relay teams finish in the top three.
In the 400, Pullum finished in 59.73 to edge Palo Verde’s Cayce Bryan (1:00.56).
The 200 was even closer, as Pullum’s time of 26.44 nipped Las Vegas High’s Creshonda Carter by .02 seconds.
“I like the 400 best,” Pullum said. “It was nice to win the 200. She (Carter) was in the next lane and I saw her in my peripheral (vision). I knew she was going to come to me.”
The only other female athlete to win two individual events was Jazzlynn Wilkens of Liberty, who won the 100 hurdles in 16.38 and the 300 hurdles in 47.05.
