Jake Phillips hurdles Gorman boys to Heitkotter Invitational title
Jake Phillips swept the hurdle events Saturday to lift Bishop Gorman’s boys track team to victory in the Heitkotter Invitational at Faith Lutheran.
Phillips won the 110-meter hurdles in a brisk 16.04 seconds, winning by nearly a full second. He also breezed to the win in the 300 hurdles in 41.27, better than a second ahead of his nearest competitor.
Gorman’s Kyu Kelly also had a big day, winning the 200 in 22.09 and running a leg on the Gaels’ winning 400 relay (42.65) and 800 relay (1:28.15) teams.
The Gaels finished with 152½ points to top the 18-team field. Centennial was second with 115, and Sierra Vista took third with 55.
Centennial’s Tre Harley won the 400 in 48.01 and was second in the 200 and third in the 100.
Liberty’s Corey Moore swept the throws with efforts of 52 feet, 4½ inches in the shot put, and 179-9 in the discus.
In the girls meet, Ashley Moore won three events to help Centennial claim the team championship.
Moore took the 100 hurdles in 15.6 and won the long jump (16-11½) and triple jump (37-2½).
Her efforts helped the Bulldogs to a total of 99 points. Green Valley was second with 65, and Coronado took third with 64.
Basic’s Raquel Chavez swept the distance events, winning the 1,600 in 5:21.49 and the 3,200 in 11:58.45.
Rancho’s Teleda Williams won the 200 (25.13), was second in the 100 and ran a leg on the Rams’ winning 1,600 relay (4:04.03).
Liberty’s Athiya Iese won the discus (126-0) and was second in the shot put.
