ROUNDUP: Gorman’s Cunningham clears 7-2 in high jump

Randall Cunningham cleared 7 feet, 2 inches in the high jump on Wednesday as Bishop Gorman’s boys track team edged host Bonanza, 72-70.

Cunningham also finished second in the long jump with a mark of 20-5½.

Cunningham, who sat out last season after transferring from Silverado, won the state meet as a freshman with a mark of 6-4.

“He’s so strong, and he goes out and he grinds every day,” Gorman coach Scott Cooley said. “I expect nothing but the best of him, and that’s just because of how hard he works. He’s a pretty special kid.”

Cooley said Cunningham, who cleared 7-2 over the summer at a meet in Texas, just missed at 7-3.

Kyle Kelley won the long jump (20-8), triple jump (43-5) and 300 hurdles (42.6 seconds) for the Gaels.

Jackson Perry posted wins in the shot put (40-10) and discus (136-8) for Gorman.

Bonanza’s Robert Rudd won the 800 (2:16.3) and 1,600 (4:36.4).

Smith, Diamondbacks beat Cimarron
At Desert Oasis, Herman Smith won two events on Wednesday to lead the Diamondbacks a 76-65 victory over Cimarron-Memorial.

Smith was first in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches) and triple jump (37 feet, 7½ inches).

Justin Harmon-Anderson won the long jump (19-6) and was third in the 100 for the Diamondbacks, and teammate Gary Abdella won the discus (118-7) and was third in the shot put.

Swanson leads Aggies over Panthers
At Palo Verde, Davariz Swanson won the long jump (19-5½) and triple jump (39-10) and was second in the high jump to lead Arbor View to a 107-39 win over the Panthers.

Elijah George took the shot put (44-1½) and discus (133-6) for Arbor View.

Bulldogs down Longhorns
At Legacy, Justin Galaviz won the 400 (51.3) and 800 (1:58.4), and Jordan Karst won the shot put (47-6) and discus (143-0½) to lead Centennial over the Longhorns, 112-42.

Casey Hughes won the 100 (10.4) and 200 (21.5) for Legacy.

Trailblazers win three-team meet
At Durango, Leontre Austin and Sami Mesgun each won two events to lead the Trailblazers (85) past Shadow Ridge (78) and Spring Mountain (20).

Austin won the 100 (11.20) and 200 (22.43), and Mesgun won the 1,600 (4:56.9) and 3,200 (10:55.0).

Nicholas Oberdin won the 400 (52.6) and 800 (2:08.6) for Shadow Ridge.

Spring Valley takes tri-meet
At Spring Valley, the Grizzlies won seven individual events and two relays to capture a three-team meet.

Spring Valley had 88 points. Sierra Vista had 66, and The Meadows had 31.

The Meadows’ Kwaku Kufuor won the 110 hurdles in 16.5 and the 300 hurdles in 45.98.
