SMALL SCHOOLS: Henry, Mustangs cruise to 2A girls title
Lauren Henry won the 200-meter dash Saturday for her third event title, leading The Meadows’ girls track and field team to the championship at the Class 2A state meet at Damonte Ranch in Reno.
Henry took the 200 in 25.91 seconds, downing second-place Valeri Nix of Incline by a full second. She also won the 100 and anchored the winning 400 relay Friday.
The Meadows captured the team crown with 120 points, topping Incline’s 95 and White Pine’s 92.
Freshman Jinks Heerema added a win in the 1,600 (5:36.08) for the Mustangs, and senior Taylor O’Neal claimed the 100 hurdles (16.51).
Heerema, Cassidy Gosse, Delaney Gosse and Bailey Gosse won the 3,200 relay in 10:57.97 for The Meadows.
Lincoln County’s Brooke Stever won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 4 1/4 inches.
In the boys meet, The Meadows’ Kwaku Kufuor won the 300 hurdles in 41.52.
Rite of Passage cruised to the team title with 165 points. White Pine was second at 74.
CLASS 3A
Malary Reid took the 100 hurdles in 15.78, and the long jump with a leap of 17-2 to lead Moapa Valley’s girls to 83 points and third place an the 3A state meet at Damonte Ranch.
Virgin Valley’s Jaime Macias won the boys 300 hurdles in 40.30 seconds.
Northern Nevada teams dominated the team standings. Elko won the girls meet with 163 points, and Churchill County the boys meet with 171.
CLASS 1A
Spring Mountain’s Montell Russum won the 300 hurdles in 41.55 to lead the Eagles to 153 points and second place at the 1A boys state meet at Damonte Ranch.
Joseph Henry added the shot put title with a throw of 44-9 1/4 for Spring Mountain, which also won the 400 relay in 46.41,
Sierra Lutheran took the boys title with 177 points.
Beatty’s Dakota Dawson won the 800 run in 2:02.36
Pahranagat Valley’s Austin Poulson took the triple jump title with 42-8 3/4.
Sierra Lutheran won the girls meet with 137 points. Beatty was second at 99, edging Indian Springs by one point.
The Thunderbirds’ Janet Masanz won the 100 hurdles in 18.24, and also helped the winning 800 relay team to a 1:57.51 win.
Indian Springs’ Erika Carpenter and Victoria Carpenter went 1-2 in the girls high jump. Erika Carpenter posted a mark of 4-8 to win.
Lund’s Melynda Boren took the girls discus title in 116-11.
