Western girls excel at Las Vegas Track Classic
Led by Female Track Athlete of the Meet Unique Conner, a trio of Western girls captured all three sprint relays at the Las Vegas Track Classic on Saturday at Del Sol.
The Warriors won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays and took every individual running event from the 100 to the 800.
Conner won the 200 (25.35 seconds) and 400 (56.3), with Tiarra Tyler taking the 100 (12.1) and Anasherae Devine the 800 (2:20.7).
Conner avenged a loss to Bonanza’s Shirley Pitts in last year’s 400 at the state meet.
Conner’s time of 56.3 seconds was a meet record and more than three seconds ahead of Pitts’ runner-up time (59.62).
The perfect weather conditions Saturday — mid-70s and little or no wind — contributed to a number of meet records.
Chaparral boys senior Joeal Hotchkins won the 100 (10.74) and long jump (22 feet, 6½ inches) and was second in the 200.
Team scores were not compiled during the two-day event, with emphasis on individual performances.
Legacy freshman Avione Allgood won Outstanding Female Field Athlete for winning the discus at 136-10. She was second in the shot put at 41-0.
Green Valley senior Bryan Artmann took Outstanding Male Field Athlete with a winning mark of 14-6 in the pole vault — more than a foot ahead of the runner-up.
Brandon Chambers of Mira Mesa (Calif.) set meet records in the 110 hurdles (14.72) and 300 hurdles (39.19) to take Outstanding Male Track Athlete.
Girls double-winners included Arbor View sophomore Candice McFarland (100 hurdles in 15.01, 300 hurdles in 46.68) and Foothill senior Leah Leedy (1,500 in 5:04.16 and 3,000 in 10:46.35).
Leedy set a meet record in the 3,000.
Liberty boys junior Al Galan took the open mile (4:41.73) and 3,000 (9:13.02).
