Del Sol continues perfect start
Del Sol’s boys volleyball team swept host Desert Oasis 27-25, 28-26, 25-14 Tuesday.
“It took a little bit for them to warm up, but once they got in the groove, they were on fire,” Dragons coach Christy Duvauchelle said. “We rallied well.”
Del Sol, which started 0-3 last season, improved to 3-0, with its wins coming at Cheyenne, Western and Desert Oasis.
Winning on the road is important for the Dragons, who matched their win total from last year with Tuesday’s victory.
“It felt good, just that we wanted to come here and beat them in their own house,” said middle blocker Aaron Rife, who had six kills and two blocks against the Diamondbacks. “We want to own every court in Vegas.”
Rife and the rest of the front row have played a big role in Del Sol’s quick start, even menacing opponents before matches.
“Everywhere we go, everyone is like ‘your front row is just beastly,’ and I know,” Duvauchelle said. “Once they’re on top of their game, it’s so hard to get through the block, and it’s so hard to defend our offense.”
Dragons outside hitter Eric Beil had six kills, three blocks and four aces, setter Nick Maglaras tallied 21 assists and six digs, and Zack Deittrick posted 10 digs.
James Johnson had six kills, five of them in the first game, including back-to-back spikes to close out the extra-set game.
“Desert Oasis gave us a good bit of competition, but once the boys got in their groove, they were unstoppable,” Duvauchelle said.
Zack Bobenhausen had 15 kills and seven blocks for the Diamondbacks (1-2), Trevor Zarvian added 15 assists and three blocks, and Trevor Stegall logged three blocks.
