ROUNDUP: Rancho controls net, tops Valley in boys volleyball
When R’Mond Hill put down the match-winning block that gave Rancho’s boys volleyball team a season sweep of Valley, he knew his team was running on all cylinders.
That’s because the Rams’ middle blocker knows that when his group is working well, the rest of the team runs its assignment like a machine.
Hill had a match-high six blocks to go with six kills to help the Rams to a 25-18, 25-18, 27-29, 25-11 victory to keep ahold of second place in the Northeast League.
“If I don’t block, it makes it harder on the team,” Hill said. “I try to keep the momentum up by blocking, and that keeps the team passing and working like clockwork.”
Rancho overtook Valley in a streaky first game for both teams that saw the Rams (9-5, 8-2 Northeast) use runs of 8-1, 7-1 and 7-3.
Hill then stepped up in the second game, as he and Ciarian Subira combined for five blocks that helped Rancho control the net.
“Whenever we can incorporate the middles, on offense or defense, it’s huge momentum for the team,”
Rancho coach Allegra Derzon said. “These guys are young, but they’re really athletic and they have athletic smarts.
“You tell them something, and they pick it up and apply it. They’re competitive, too. They want to make every play, but not for selfish reasons.”
Kyle Stankosky added 13 digs, four kills and two aces for Rancho, which relied on the senior team captain to control the floor and assist on almost every block.
“All of the guys look to him for advice; he’s like their gauge,” Derzon said of Stankosky, the team’s lone returning varsity player. “And he’s handled that responsibility very well, knowing that the guys look up to him.
“He leads vocally and also by example.”
Guillermo Silva had seven kills, and Nathan Campo supplied 12 assists for Rancho, which also got 11 digs from Matt Brown.
“When we get the blocks, we make their offense hard to run,” Hill said. “They have to dig up the ball, and that’s going to make it hard for the setter to get the sets.”
