1A QUARTERFINALS: Henderson International makes history with win
Henderson International’s girls volleyball team won a postseason match for the first time Friday with a 25-15, 18-25, 28-26, 23-25, 15-7 win over Lund in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Southern League tournament at Desert Oasis.
Pamela Sakuma had eight kills, two blocks and two aces to lead the Wolverines (12-10), who scored the first six points in the fifth game.
“I told the girls they made history today,” Wolverines coach Linda Staley said. “They don’t understand what it means to make history for a school.”
Henderson International will play defending 1A state champion Lake Mead (29-4) in a semifinal with a trip to the state tournament on the line at 10:40 a.m. today at Desert Oasis.
Henderson International’s Lee Harrison had seven kills and four blocks, and Kendal Short added three aces.
Melynda Boren had 15 kills and five blocks for Lund (8-7). Ale Vega contributed 14 kills and eight blocks, and Kaitlin Farnsworth added six kills and three blocks and Brandi Lacovara had four kills.
Lake Mead 3, Indian Springs 0 — Ashley Newton had 17 kills and nine digs to lead the Eagles to a 25-10, 25-10, 25-9 sweep of the Thunderbirds (4-15).
Lake Mead’s Jocelyn Cox had 27 assists, seven aces and six digs. Amanda Wellman contributed nine digs and six kills, and Sam Herman added seven kills and three digs. Annabelle Liston supplied six aces and six digs.
It was Lake Mead’s first match since a 3-0 win over Sandy Valley on Oct. 27.
“Right now, we’ve got to get our chemistry back,” Lake Mead coach Diana Lewis said. “It’s been a while since we’ve played. We’ve got to get back into that groove again of being able to communicate.”
Alexxa Reinke led Indian Springs with four kills.
Tonopah 3, Round Mountain 0 — Amanda O’Donnell had eight digs, six kills and two aces to lead the Muckers (12-6) to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 sweep of the Knights (9-10).
Britney Klapper dished out 16 assists for Tonopah, which will play Pahranagat Valley (20-4) at 9 a.m. today. Sam Kimber added seven blocks and four kills, Deanna Van Poucke had four kills and two blocks, and Meghann Thibodeaux notched five digs.
Kattrena Akers had 11 digs and 10 kills for Round Mountain. Anissa Jones added two aces.
Pahranagat Valley 3, Beatty 0 — The Panthers cruised to a 25-12, 25-12, 25-15 sweep of the Hornets (9-14).
