Green Valley volleyball star Brozovich named Southeast MVP

Green Valley girls volleyball coach Erin Hill was cleaning things up after the season, when she came across a video from Sydney Brozovich’s freshman year.

Hill couldn’t believe how far her senior middle hitter had come.

“To see the difference, it’s not even the same player,” Hill said. “She’s developed so much. She was a leader for us on the court. She really had a never-give-up attitude.”

That attitude helped the Gators earn the Southeast League’s top playoff seed this fall, and the league’s coaches named Brozovich the Southeast League Most Valuable Player.

The 6-foot-3-inch Brozovich gave the Gators a huge presence at the net.

“We had a middle attack that as long as our setter kept getting her the ball, she kept putting it down,” Hill said.

Brozovich was one of four league MVPs named by area coaches.

Hayley Spelman, a 6-6 Stanford recruit who led Durango to a state tournament appearance, was the Southwest League MVP.

Sarah Arceneaux, who helped Rancho to the Northeast League title, was that league’s MVP, and Palo Verde’s Nicole Gneiting was the Northwest League MVP.

Del Sol’s Albert Ronquillo (Southeast), Rancho’s Allegra Derzon (Northeast), Legacy’s Amber Hansen (Northwest) and Durango’s Bob Kelly (Southwest) were named Coaches of the Year.

Brozovich’s teammate Siga Appelgate also made the All-Southeast first team along with Silverado’s Taylor Richard and Patti Flag, Coronado’s Katie Gamsky and Del Sol’s Kadie Miller.

In the Northeast, Arceneaux was joined by Las Vegas’ Danica Pickett and Natresha Bernard, Valley’s Maureen Aquino, Eldorado’s Sarah Childs, and Chaparral’s Jordan McGinness.

The Northwest first team included Gneiting and Palo Verde teammate Tori Lounsbery along with Johnna Brown, Hillary O’Shaughnessy and Morgan Vieira of Centennial and Kylee Schraft of Shadow Ridge.

In the Southwest, Durango’s Morgan Malone, Bishop Gorman’s Dannielle Diamant and Kylie Shaw, Pahrump Valley’s Kristi Daffer and Western’s Megan Riggs rounded out the first team.
