ROUNDUP: McDearmon’s pin sparks Shadow Ridge
Shadow Ridge 145-pound wrestler Nick McDearmon knew his match was important.
Palo Verde had just taken a 14-12 lead on the Mustangs, and McDearmon held a 4-2 edge over Tyler Haugh. Haugh chose to start the third period in the down position.
At that point, McDearmon felt the match was won, he later admitted.
“When he chose down, I thought to myself, ‘optional start,’ ‘cause I felt like I was stronger than him,” McDearmon said. “So I was just going to try it and see what happens. I don’t think he was ready for it. When I got (a cradle), I knew it was over from there. I went to my signature move, head in the hole.”
McDearmon’s match set off a firestorm, as the next four matches ended in Mustang pins en route to a 54-26 win against visiting Palo Verde.
“We’re still a young team; we only have three seniors in our lineup,” Shadow Ridge coach Gus Gledhill said. “To see those underclassmen go pin-pin-pin, that was nice for us.
Gledhill said he knew pins would be key against the Panthers.
“We knew we matched up well,” Gledhill said. “And we knew it would come down to who gets the most pins. We knew that if we pinned in those upper weight classes, then we’d have a good shot at winning the dual.”
After McDearmon’s match, Sylvae Washington, Josh Mullins, Michael Tootle and Jordan Kurth all won by pin in a combined 359 seconds. A forfeit by 215-pounder Brandon Fisher clinched the win for the Mustangs.
“When we’re on, we’re on fire; nobody can stop us. It’s ridiculous,” said McDearmon, who also plays quarterback at Shadow Ridge. “I think we just feed off of each other. On Saturdays, when one person loses, it feeds from there. And the opposite happened tonight. It was great to have that pin to start it all.”
Shadow Ridge also got wins from Sean Mestas, Mitchell Refasco and Spencer Mckee.
Jordan Hart, Robert Buckhannon, Paul Educate, Jason Prevs and Brian Baird won for the Panthers. Hart, Buckhannon and Baird registered pins.
Against Cheyenne, the Mustangs racked up five pins to cruise to a 63-11 win over the Desert Shields.
Mestas, Refasco, Mckee, Washington, Kurth and Fisher won by pin.
Kenny Pero won at 140 pounds for Cheyenne.
Panthers beat Desert Shields
At Shadow Ridge, Palo Verde pulled out four pins and won four more by forfeit to rout Cheyenne, 60-15.
Hart, John Plambeck, Marcus Judd and Thayer Coon notched pins for the Panthers.
Cheyenne’s Anthony Carbajal and Shane Mulvey won by pin.
Bickel posts two quick wins in Rancho split
At Rancho, Omar Bickel only needed 17 seconds total to record two pins as Rancho split a pair of dual matches.
The Rams were 48-30 winners over Sunrise Mountain, but dropped a 43-15 decision to Eldorado. Eldorado was a 72-10 winner over Sunrise Mountain.
Bickel won by pin in five seconds against Eldorado. He needed 12 seconds to pin his Sunrise Mountain opponent.
Liberty picks up dual wins
At Liberty, the Patriots earned a pair of victories, beating Silverado 52-27 and Del Sol 69-12.
The Patriots had eight pins against Silverado and seven against Del Sol.
Skyhawks top Dragons
At Liberty, Silverado used four pins and three wins off forfeits to beat Del Sol, 47-30.
Ferguson leads Bonanza to a pair of victories
At Bonanza, Franz Ferguson won a pair of matches by pin to lead the Bengals to victories over Durango and Spring Valley.
Bonanza defeated Durango 58-21, then edged Spring Valley, 37-36.
