Virgin Valley’s Ty Smith claims national crown

Virgin Valley’s Ty Smith won a national championship at 113 pounds at the Freestyle Junior National Wrestling Championships in Fargo, North Dakota last week.

Smith, who will be a senior this fall, defeated Brandon Kaylor of Puyallup, Washington, by technical fall (17-6) in the final to earn the national crown.

Smith, who has won three state titles, also won by technical fall in the semifinals, and earned a 5-0 decision in the quarterfinals.

Smith wasn’t the only area wrestler to perform well in the Junior Nationals.

Green Valley’s Steele Dias placed fifth at 106 pounds in both freestyle and Greco Roman competitions.

In the Freestyle Cadet Nationals, a division for athletes born in 2001 and 2002, Faith Lutheran’s Connor Bourne was fifth at 182 pounds. He was sixth at 182 in the Cadet Greco Roman tournament.

Arbor View’s Peyton Prussin placed fourth at 112 pounds in the Women’s Cadet Nationals. Prussin also placed eighth at 112 pounds in the Women’s Junior Nationals.

Bishop Gorman’s Allison Petix was eighth at 132 pounds in the Women’s Junior Nationals.
