Air Canada employees caught on video carelessly handling luggage
Two Air Canada employees might not have a job much longer after they were caught on video carelessly handling luggage at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
“The employees involved have been advised that their employment will be terminated pending the outcome of our investigation,” airline spokeswoman Angela Mah told the Toronto Star Sunday night.
The video taken by Dwayne Stewart, who was a passenger on the plane waiting to take off, was posted to YouTube last week and clearly shows an employee dropping luggage into bins from high above instead of walking down the stairs.
Stewart wrote on the description of his YouTube video that the bags the employees were handling were carry-on luggage that had to be gate-checked because the flight was overcrowded.
“The gate check, unfortunately, turned into a gate toss,” Stewart told CBC News Toronto. “We were so shocked we had to laugh … it looked comical, it looked like it wasn’t real.”
The video went viral and quickly sparked outrage on Twitter. Air Canada took to the social network to do some damage control and responded to outraged Twitter users.
“We are sorry about how those bags were handled! We have launched an investigation into this as it is not representative of our policies & procedures, which dictate that bags must be carried by hand to the bag carts,” Air Canada tweeted to one user in multiple tweets.
