Former Gaming Control Board member joining law firm

Mark Clayton

Former Gaming Control Board member Mark Clayton, the attorney who didn’t seek reappointment to one of the top jobs as a gaming regulator, saying he thought Gov. Jim Gibbons should be able to put his own person in the job, is expected to join the gaming division of Lionel, Sawyer and Collins. An official announcement could come as soon as later today.

Before his appointment to the board four years ago by Gov. Kenny Guinn, Clayton was vice president of corporate law for Caesars Entertainment. He also had worked as general counsel for the Aladdin Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and Showboat Inc., with properties in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Indiana and Australia.

Earlier in his career he was chief of the control board’s corporate securities division. He knows the industry from inside the board’s operations as a regulator and from the outside representing the industry.

Clayton, 43, told Gov. Gibbons on Nov. 7 he wouldn’t seek another term, explaining, "I felt it was best to let the governor select his own board member.”

Gibbons selected another Mark, this one Mark Lipparelli, who also has experience both within the control board and outside in private industry, and like Mark Clayton, is 43.
