Filing begins for Henderson justice of the peace seat

Anyone looking to enter the election for a vacant Henderson justice of the peace seat can file their candidacy starting Monday.

The filing period ends at 5 p.m. Friday. Candidates can file for the seat between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. in Room 1113 of the Clark County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, Las Vegas.

The Department 1 seat became vacant when Judge Rodney T. Burr left the bench after 25 years earlier this month. Burr was appointed by the Henderson City Council as the interim Municipal Court judge, a lower court position than the one he left.

The municipal seat was open because the elected judge, Diana Hampton, was found dead in her home in March. The Clark County coroner’s office said she died from an infection in her right arm and ruled her death an accident. The office noted that she had toxic levels of the potent painkiller fentanyl in her system at the time of her death.

Henderson City Councilman Sam Bateman announced last week that he would be filing for the election.

The last day to withdraw candidacy or rescind withdrawal of candidacy is May 31. The election department will be closed on May 30 for Memorial Day.
