Nevada legislator cooling-off bill signed into law

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval signed a bill Thursday imposing a cooling-off period before lawmakers who leave office can return to the Legislature to lobby their former colleagues.

Assembly Bill 273, sponsored by Assemblyman Pat Hickey, R-Reno, is intended to slow the revolving door between politics and influence peddling.

Under the measure, the cooling-off period begins when a lawmaker leaves office and extends through adjournment of the next regular legislative session. Violations are a misdemeanor.

It was approved unanimously by the Senate and Assembly.

The law is effective after the November 2016 next general election, meaning it does not apply to sitting legislators.
