Truth in Music bill becomes law
CARSON CITY — Gov. Jim Gibbons signed into law Thursday a bill making it a deceptive trade practice for musical groups with no original members of a famous group to bill themselves as the original act.
Senate Bill 53 was sought by performers claiming financial harm from bogus acts using the famous names of oldies rock and doo-wop groups.
Under the Truth in Music law, a famous group’s name can’t be used unless the act includes at least one original member or otherwise has established a legal claim to the name.
