Vote gives school districts more time to make job offers

CARSON CITY — The state Senate has agreed to give school districts more time to notify teachers if they have job offers for the upcoming school year.

Under Assembly Bill 565, school districts have until May 16 to send out employment notices. Without the extension, districts would have to give notice by May 1. Employees have until May 25 to accept their positions.

The bill has been on priority status since the Assembly passed AB565 as an emergency measure last Friday. The Senate Finance Committee fast-tracked the bill Tuesday morning and then moved it to an afternoon floor vote.

The bill will be reported back to the Assembly before going to the governor.
