Syndergaard struggles in 51s’ 8-5 loss
Noah Syndergaard surrendered six runs (four earned) in four innings in his shortest outing of the season for the 51s, who lost consecutive games for the first time this year in a 8-5 defeat to the El Paso Chihuahuas before a crowd of 6,565 at Cashman Field.
Rated the New York Mets’ No. 1 prospect by Baseball America, Syndergaard (2-2, 4.95 ERA) allowed six hits with three strikeouts, three walks and a wild pitch in the opener of Las Vegas’ season-long 12-game homestand. He gave up his first home run of the season in the third inning, when Cody Decker launched a three-run shot to left to put El Paso ahead 6-1.
Taylor Teagarden homered to start a three-run fourth for Las Vegas (12-5), which had a season-high five steals and left 10 men on base.
The 51s, who entered with the best 16-game start in franchise history following a 6-2 road trip to Fresno and Reno, look to get back on track at 12:05 p.m. today against the Chihuahuas (7-9) behind starter Jacob deGrom (1-0, 0.50 ERA).
