Guard helps Twolves; Cassell says no
RESERVE LIGHTS IT UP
Jonny Flynn came off the bench to score 21 points and dish out five assists to help lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to an 89-82 victory over the Washington Wizards in an NBA Summer League game at Cox Pavilion tonight.
Flynn made 7 of 11 shots from the field and all seven of his free-throw attempts in the victory. Flynn was one of three point guards selected by Minnesota in the first round. Ricky Rubio is still contracted to his Spanish team, but Wayne Ellington also contributed significantly in the victory. The former North Carolina star had 19 points for Minnesota. Nick Young had a game-high 23 points to pace Washington.
Over in the Thomas & Mack Center, Anthony Roberson scored 24 points to lead Chicago to an 80-74 victory over Oklahoma City. James Harden connected on four 3-pointers to lead the Thunder with 20 points. Harden added five assists. Ohio State product B.J. Mullens scored just seven points on 3-for-9 shooting.
NEW JOB
Sam Cassell was on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the Wizards. He is getting acclimated to his new job. Cassell retired from the NBA after last season, and he was hired by Washington as an assistant coach to Flip Saunders in May. With a new position comes a new way to turn down an interview.
“Assistant coaches can’t talk to the media, bro,” he said. “Go talk to the head coach.”
We’ll pass, but thanks anyway bro.
PHENOM
There is a great deal of young talent on display this week, but it has been hard for any of the players to outshine Mikhaila Montecillo. The 10-year old has performed two rousing renditions of the National Anthem this week to huge ovations.
COMING UP
The Denver Nuggets take on the Portland Trail Blazers in the final game at the Cox Pavilion. Contrary to a prior posting, the Suns will take on the D-League Select team to conclude the action at the Thomas & Mack Center at 7:30.
The Nuggets roster is highlighted by former North Carolina point guard Ty Lawson. The lightning-quick point guard is joined by scorer Coby Karl. Lawson will be opposed in the backcourt by former Arizona point guard Jerryd Bayless of Portland.
