Spurs top Lakers to open play Thursday

Gary Neal and Tyler Wilkerson each scored 20 points to help San Antonio to an 80-71 victory over the Lakers in the first game of Day 7 at the NBA Vegas Summer League at Cox Pavilion.

Neal was a prolific scorer throughout a troubled college career at LaSalle and Towson State. He is a scoring star in Europe and is currently the starting shooting guard for one of the most high-profile teams outside of the NBA, Benetton Treviso of Italy.

Darryl Watkins added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who used a 23-12 third-quarter advantage to pull away.

Gerald Green finally had the type of game fans here had been expecting, as he broke out for 18 points and seven rebounds for Los Angeles.

Mixing it up

The Phoenix Suns had to pull the old switch-a-roo before taking on the Warriors in the day’s second game.

No, they didn’t reprogram all the presets on Golden State’s car radio.

The summer league jerseys are reversible and both teams took the floor in their dark jerseys.

Just before tipoff, all the Suns players removed their jerseys and switched them over to white.

If you are thinking to yourself, wait a minute, “I thought the old switch-a-roo is when you poison your drink, then you switch It with the other person’s,” you are right.

If you are now thinking this entry is just about squeezing in a completely random “Seinfeld” reference, you are even more right.

Packing it in

Cox Pavilion was absolutely jam-packed for the first game of the day.

People love the Lakers, whether it’s the actual team or a bunch of guys wearing the uniform in the summer.

As the game ended, the mad rush of people exiting created a brutal log jam for those trying to enter for the second game.
