HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
3 Sanguine – Ran well coming off an 8-month hiatus; had reason to be tired late, drops in class a lot more tonight.
1 Joe Carl – Logical chalk has done his best running over synthetics; should relish the return to Hollywood surface.
Long Shot – 5 Capture the Call
Race 2 – 7 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Twodollarstowin – Nice win at Santa Anita, but her preferred surface is synthetics; hate the rail in an elongated sprint.
6 Miss Addy Kiss – Was overmatched in last race allowance; these are her friends and her speed will make her dangerous.
Long Shot – 8 Powerofvoodoo
Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Katelyn n’ Jenna – Mike Mitchell has won more races this meet than the other 7 trainers combined; the one to beat.
8 Shootin Breez Star – Turf Paradise shipper has a solid puncher’s chance; how often could you say that in past years?
Long Shot – 4 Giveitupforthelady
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Big Bad Boo – Was overmatched in last, but did try very hard regardless; these are his friends in this easier spot.
2 Twoatten Tenattwo – Like his last two races at Santa Anita; key will be if he matures enough to handle the synthetics today.
Long Shot – 8 Roman Counsel
Race 5 – 6 furlongs (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $44,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
1 Luckarack – Like the rail post in these turf sprints at Hollywood; they take a sharp left after a break from the gate.
2 Dancing At Dark – Logical chalk turned in a big last run in last; still a question mark on turf, but not in class, talent.
Long Shot – 3 Courtside
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
3 Depth – He has been improving with each start; first time around 2 turns, suspect will be forwardly placed.
1 Lord Vronsky – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; saves all the ground inside.
Long Shot – 5 Cantona
Race 7 – 1 1/4 miles (turf, rail at 20 feet), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Foolish Comment – Ran like a short horse off a 10-month hiatus; handled these marathon distances well in Ireland.
5 Porfido – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career-low class level; figures a 9-YO will not get claimed either.
Long Shot – 1 Temple’s Door
Race 8 – 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 2-year-olds
2 Baby Blake – Fast worker and bred to win early; has the right jockey, P Val, to break fast from the gate and keep on going.
5 Nebikon – Interesting FTS from Inglewood-based Mike Harrington; suspect his babies will make a mark before long.
Long Shot – 8 Respuesta Solida
Best Bet – 6 Big Bad Boo (race 4)
Hollywood Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$41.80; Long Shots, 9/2/$16.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.60
Hollywood Park Totals – 136/38/$279.80; Long Shots, 68/11/$105.40; Best Bets, 7/4/$16.40
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – 6 Our Dark Knight (7/2) in race 9 at Churchill Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Breathless Storm was scratched at Belmont Park. Stats – 72/47/$366.40
