HORSE RACING

TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time noon

Race 1 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds

1 Swiss Charm – One race experience can be a great teacher; moves from parking lot post to the rail, the one to beat.

7 On Your Mark – Benchmark is a reliable Cal-bred sire; like the teaming of Joel Rosario and Carla Gaines.

Long Shot – 6 Reddy Go Jaylo

Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

1 Tokubetsu – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, so keep an eye on 3 Midnight Interlude; no shock if the longer price wins.

2 Runflatout – Owner West Point Thoroughbreds likes to win races first out; bullet works and watch the tote board for clues.

Long Shot – 6 Le Mans

Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

6 Champagneandlilies – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career-low level; need not be much horse to beat these.

4 Mystery Bird – Ran evenly last time for her second in-the-money finish on dirt in 3 tries; appears to be improving.

Long Shot – 2 Pivotal Queen

Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up

6 K. Jems – Huge rider switch from a bugboy to the returning Martin Garcia; suspect he’ll be one hungry rider right now.

1 Hostile Waters – Expect value with this low percentage connections; his last race, if repeated, is fast enough to upset.

Long Shot – 5 Jakey Boy

Race 5 – 6 furlongs, $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint, 4-year-olds and up

3 Cost of Freedom – Logical favorite must prove he’s as fast on dirt; luckily the switch from synthetics to dirt is easier.

7 Apriority – Really blossomed when shipped back east to run over dirt; this is a test for class, he may just be this good.

Long Shot – 4 Don Tito

Race 6 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), $300,000 Sunshine Millions Turf, 4-year-olds and up

3 Jeranimo – His last two wins on grass show this may be his preferred surface; 5-YO horse may have a higher ceiling on turf.

7 The Usual Q. T. – Logical chalk ran like he needed the race last time; may have suffered the BC bounce last time.

Long Shot – 5 Caracortado

Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Sunshine Millions Distaff, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

7 Evening Jewel – Suspect the early pace could be quick setting it up for closers; the Monrovia was a prep for this.

6 All Due Respect – Like her gradual development since moving to the Kathy Walsh barn; can provide a minor upset today.

Long Shot – 3 Briecat

Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Allowance, 4-year-olds and up

8 Domonation – Like the parking lot posts down the hillside course; been training great and is a deadly closer.

2 Detroit Donnie – This is one quick gelding who figures to clear early under P Val; could wire the field at boxcar prices.

Long Shot – 6 Pack Your Bags

Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

4 Hot Affair – She has kept improving with each career start; if Warren’s Blossom runs well in race 7, look out here.

3 Dani Reese – Hard-trying mare has a nose for the finish line; can pick up the pieces if the race falls apart late.

Long Shot – 2 Word Association

Race 10 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up

3 Stoneside – Was flattered when Sassou won wire-to-wire on Friday; Corey Nakatani is still among the best turf riders.

2 Galleta Monstruo – If I can get Rafael Bejarano at 12/1 odds, so be it; like the turn back in distance from one mile.

Long Shot – 10 Moudez

Best Bet – 3 Stoneside (race 10)

Santa Anita Park Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/6/$47.40; Long Shots, 8/1/$4.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.80

Santa Anita Park Totals – 365/99/$634.10; Long Shots, 181/26/$277.40; Best Bets, 21/10/$39.30

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – 1-1a entry Satisfied Mind/Glazed Wings (5/2) in race 5 at Tampa Bay Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, War Fighter won at Tampa Bay Downs paying $8.60 to win, $5.00 to place and $2.40 to show. Stats – 21/17/$151.00
