TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Muny – Mike Mitchell charge has proven himself in this class; tactical speed to sit a trip and fire late.
1 Drift King – Like the ground saving aspect of post 1; in Inglewood turf sprints, it’s a quick left leaving the chute.
Long Shot – 3 Classic Bobby
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
1 Night Badger – Did everything but win last time in a big effort; anything close to a repeat should beat these.
2 He Makes It Rain – FTS from Carla Gaines looks like the main rival to the chalk; like that Garrett Gomez is staying busy.
Long Shot – 4 Troy Story
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, Purse $52,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
3 Gun Boat – Gets class relief from the Affirmed for this allowance condition; colt is still highly regarded
1 Eaton Hall – Other half of an uncoupled Bob Baffert entry; looks like the main rival to upset his teammate.
Long Shot – 5 High Test
Race 4 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 No Silent – Huge rider switch to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot; three agonizing seconds, that figures to end today.
3 Awkward Mondays – FTS from Carla Gaines who could bookend debut winners; she had one earlier in race 2.
Long Shot – 7 Warrior’s Ridge
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Magic Castle – Logical chalk is one of the few to have a positive resume; solid debut second for Ron Ellis, blinkers on too.
1 Warren’s Dr. Boo – Big class drop offers him a shot in a moribund field; this will be a sundial slow race.
Long Shot – 5 Ride Captain
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Van Brit – Any horse that wins 9-of-18 on turf is a real trier; blue plate specialist runs hard every time out.
7 Jinny Jump Up – Brice Blanc had choices and opted for the chalk; Rafael Bejarano is a capable replacement.
Long Shot – 6 Donner Wasser
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Aragorn Sword – Slow start in last, but a fast finish; looked like a horse that needed a start off a 10-month hiatus.
11 Run for Miles – Claimed by Bill Spawr off a high speed effort; this is a group she can last a lot longer.
Long Shot – 7 Cragmont
Race 8 – 1 mile (turf), $150,000 Royal Heroine, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Quiet Oasis – Mario Gutierrez has ridden this filly perfectly twice in a row; hard to believe this jockey does not get more work.
4 All Star Heart – She has won 6-of-11 turf races in a well managed career; she has won 3 straight and was not the favorite.
Long Shot – 2 Up In Time
Race 9 – 1 1/4 miles, $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup, 3-year-olds and up
6 Game On Dude – Arguably the best racehorse in America; they took a shot in Dubai, but he’ll stay in SoCal the rest of the year.
2 Richard’s Kid – This is Bob Baffert’s world and he only lets us watch; he will bring the horse all the way back to form.
Long Shot – 3 Kettle Corn
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Classical Hy – Consistent sort sat too close to the pace in last; looks like he prefers to settle and grind in the lane.
2 Awesome Mike – This one might be better off sent hard early; he shows no compunction for passing horses in the stretch.
Long Shot – 7 Bitethebulitsuper
Best Bet – 1 Night Badger (race 2)
Betfair Hollywood Park Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/8/$40.80; Long Shots, 6/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
