HORSE RACING
TODAY AT HOLLYWOOD PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Derrick Do – His last two speed figures make him a very strong favorite tonight; right jockey for speedball tactics.
3 Quintons Flash – Didn’t handle the turf at all in last; returns to synthetics where his best results have come.
Long Shot – 1 Lucky Fitz
Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $12,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Seven Secrets – Been away 2 years, but was running with classier foes; the main question is fitness and what’s still left.
6 Victorian Prince – Steve Knapp likes to win races on the drop; this guy is a real cheapie, but a hard tryer.
Long Shot – 4 Surf Town
Race 3 – 6 furlongs (turf), $55,000 Wild Harmony, 3-year-olds and up
3 My Summer Slew – No shame chasing Cost of Freedom in last; this is easier and his 3-of-6 wins on grass is solid.
5 Dilemma – Good turf record and his best races have come in Inglewood; will sit in arrears and make one big brush.
Long Shot – 2 Afleet Ruler
Race 4 – 7 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Exclamation – Gutsy win in last at a juicy 8/1 price; third start off a 2-month hiatus, has good tactical speed too.
1 Rummysecret War – Logical chalk entry from Jack Carava; expect one horse to fly early and the other to rally late.
Long Shot – 6 Egypt
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $38,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Contractual – Crapped out at odds on in her SoCal debut; is well regarded and given a second chance here.
7 Dubawi Heights – Came to the U.S. with lots of potential; her second SoCal start was a lot better than her first.
Long Shot – 3 Tizalwaysomething
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $38,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
2 Quintons Destiny – Second time out for Dan Hendricks; key for me is Garrett Gomez, this guy should improve.
4 The Factor – Favorite is a FTS from Bob Baffert; the tote board can tell you more than me, figures to be singing.
Long Shot – 1 Pride of Silver
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), $100,000 Miesque, Fillies, 2-year-olds
4 Cloneylass – Was flattered when Lauren Byrd won next time out; she may not have been wound tight for U.S. debut.
3 California Nectar – Makes her turf debut in a tough heat; Cal-bred has earned this shot facing open company.
Long Shot – 1 Neversaidiwassweet
Race 8 – 7 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
4 Nextdoorneighbor – Like the turn back in distance for this elongated sprint; adding blinkers on and P Val.
8 Solar Rocket – Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry, this is the longer price; the other is the chalk, Alcindor.
Long Shot – Scofield Barracks
Race 9 – 1 1/4 miles (turf), $250,000 Hollywood Derby, 3-year-olds
3 Sebastian Flyte – Tiny edge in one difficult heat; the winner is whomever can get the best trip in this even affair.
2 Blue Panis – Did everything but win in his U.S. debut in the Oak Tree Derby; figures to be lone early speed again.
Long Shot – 1 Lions Story
Race 10 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, 2-year-olds
7 Bryan Daniel – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to graduate.
1a Hot Tub Aaron – In a field this poor, you need to look twice at any FTS; been training at Fairplex, not a good sign.
Long Shot – 2 Double D’s Diamond
Best Bet – 5 Derrick Do (race 1)
Hollywood Park Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 20/6/$37.20; Long Shots, 10/3/$42.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.00
Hollywood Park Totals – 252/75/$426.00; Long Shots, 124/23/$230.60; Best Bets, 15/5/$18.20
SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY – 6 Aphrodite Storm (2/1) in race 1 at Parx Racing. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Soaring Empire ran out at Aqueduct. Stats – 196/140/$1,076.00
