HORSE RACING

TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $37,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up

3 Winsome Charm – Has run 2 decent races this meet at Del Mar; fits this class and is one of the ones.

7 Cayambe – Poor record in a turf mile; but he’s faced this cheap only once and figures to run on late.

Long Shot – 4 Interpratation

Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

2 Sammy’s A Runnin’ – For forgiving horseplayers as he ran bad last out as a beaten chalk; can only improve.

5 Adriatic Moon – Reclaimed by Mark Glatt, a very strong trainer angle; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal.

Long Shot – 1 Memphis

Race 3 – 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), $200,000 Del Mar Handicap, 3-year-olds and up

3 Bourbon Bay – Better a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond; best will dominate these.

1 Make Music For Me – Got the confidence booster he needed in last; now ready to take on tougher here.

Long Shot – 4 Celtic New Year

Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $48,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds

9 Deluxe Bus – Won last off the claim by Gary Sherluck; ran less than his best so maybe more in the tank.

6 – Offlee Wild Boys – Small but significant class drop can get him over the hump; good tactical speed.

Long Shot – 5 Diamond Geezah

Race 5 – 7 furlongs, $250,000 Pat O’Brien, 3-year-olds and up

5 Smiling Tiger – Could not overcome a bad start in last; will prove he is the top older sprinter out west.

4 The Factor – Bob Baffert 3-YO tackles his elders today; been away 5-months, but is turning back in distance.

Long Shot – 6 Crown of Thorns

Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

3 Correspondent – Notice how Garrett Gomez and Rafael Bejarano switched mounts for this; will be closing strongly.

4 Born Lucky – Bejarano lands here after 3 seconds in a row under Gomez; will like the turf rail out 14 feet.

Long Shot – 1 Thisismystage

Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

12 Aeromon – Was flattered when Mega Heat won on Saturday; parking lot post OK in a wide open sprint.

9 Shane Daniels – Interesting long shot has run 3-for-3 seconds at Del Mar; draw a line thru his last turf try.

Long Shot – 1 Armenian Star

Race 8 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $70,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up

3 Tamarack Smarty – Was flattered when Norvsky won next out; dead late closer in third start off a 2-month hiatus.

7 Atticus Jack – Exits the same race behind Tamarack Smarty; won’t take much to turn the tables on that one.

Long Shot – 1 Alley Hondro

Race 9 – 1 1/4 miles, $1-million TVG Pacific Classic, 3-year-olds and up

2 Jeranimo – Adept on sod or synthetics; no one doubts his distance quality, will be grinding hard in the lane.

9 Twirling Candy – Logical chalk has more holes than Swiss cheese; remains the horse to beat though.

Long Shot – 1 Don Cavallo

Race 10 – 1 mile, Purse $30,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

3 Gilligan – It only seems Mike Mitchell wins with every horse he starts; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.

12 Joe Carl – Tried to steal a pot at Arapahoe in a good try; these are his friends and should get a piece.

Long Shot – 7 Sanquine

Race 11 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

12 Candys Girl – Parking lot post in this elongated sprint; expect P Val to ride him aggressively tonight.

1 Make Mine Remy – Did everything but win in a good try last out; suspect Candys Girl will latch on to her throat.

Long Shot – 9 Duda Ten

Best Bet – 3 Bourbon Bay (race 3)

Del Mar Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/3/$26.00; Long Shots, 8/2/$19.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals – 477/105/$706.20; Long Shots, 231/37/$468.80; Best Bets, 27/10/$58.20

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #2 Gleam of Hope (8/5) in race 1 at Arlington Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Poseidon’s Warrior ran out at Saratoga. Stats – 143/92/$736.10
