Horse Racing, Hollywood Park, June 30
Today at Hollywood Park
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs (turf), Purse $35,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Grumpy Small Mouth – Logical chalk exiting two good races in a row; the horses to his inside are not very fast.
5 Absolutcat – Main danger for the chalk has been away 5-months; he is fast enough, but the key question will be fitness.
Long Shot – 1 Frisky Moment
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Lady Aragorn – Finally broke thru with a nice race last out; she returned from a 8-month hiatus so hopefully she won’t bounce.
5 Miss California – Leap of faith as she was very well bet in debut; suspect she has some improvement buried inside of her.
Long Shot – 7 Unusual Jewel
Race 3 – 7 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Go to the Pulpit – This pick is for forgiving handicappers only; beaten 43-lengths in last, hie race two back was good.
2 Circle Drive – Tepid chalk in a less than stellar field; the key is he is sliding down the claiming ladder to a career low price tag.
Long Shot – 3 Warren’s Concept
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Hout Bay – Sliding down the claiming ladder to the lowest price of her career; need not be much to beat this moribund group.
8 Arinyes Love – Was overmatched in last; has some OK races before that which make her competitive with these.
Long Shot – 5 J and S Express
Race 5 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
3 Toruk Makto – Closed very strongly in last, plus he had a tough trip too; this is a paceless race, maybe a jockey’s race.
6 Dreamcatcher – Tepid chalk in a wide open field; Rafael Bejarano for Victor Espinoza who is riding Toruk Makto.
Long Shot – 2 Swift Eagle
Race 6 – 7 furlongs, $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
6 The Factor – Bob Baffert keeps insisting The Factor will run big; who am I to question him, suspect will be grossly overbet.
7 Smiling Tiger – Appears to be rounding into form in third start off a 9-month hiatus; should see a fast pace to close into.
Long Shot – 2 Centralinteligence
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
6 Ricspretentiousgal – Doug O’Neill has an uncoupled entry and this is the shorter price; ran very well in turf debut last out.
4 Jolly Days – Logical chalk off two good turf route races in a row for Paddy Gallagher; Garrett Gomez remains loyal to the cause.
Long Shot – 5 Light of Life
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $52,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Patriot’s Voyage – Part of an uncoupled Bob Baffert entry; Jose Valdivia getting a rare shot to ride in the Baffert barn.
3 Take Control – His one race was more than 2 1/2 years ago; you can practically treat this one like a FTS as he’s only run once.
Long Shot – 5 Death Star
Race 9 – 1 mile (turf), $300,000 Shoemaker Mile, 3-year-olds and up
8 Mr. Commons – Mike Smith should see more pace with eastern invader Little Mike here; had no excuse losing in last to Wilkinson.
6 Corporate Jungle – I actually like this eastern shipper more than Little Mike; Chad Brown is one of my favorite trainers to bet.
Long shot – 3 Little Mike
Race 10 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $50,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
8 Money Makin Sam – This race is full of FTS so you have a big edge over me; Doug O’Neill has an uncoupled entry in here.
3 Great Friends Rule – This is the other O’Neill horse; this one is a gelding so he must have had some issues early on.
Long Shot – 1 Fighting Hussar
Best Bet – 8 Mr. Commons (race 9)
Betfair Hollywood Park Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/7/$37.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Betfair Hollywood Park Totals – 620/161/$1,031.20; Long Shots, 312/48/$483.80; Best Bets, 32/11/$44.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #6 Teeth of the Dog (5/2) in race 10 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Wildie ran out at Churchill Downs. Stats – 99/67/$553.30; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
