Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Oct. 16
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Boss Cat – Claimed by Mark Glatt at Del Mar; first thing he does is geld him, which is the ultimate equipment change.
4 Coolington – Run for $30K which is lower than his claim price of $40K; big rider switch to Rafael Bejarano for the money shot.
Long Shot – 1 The Twelfth Man
Race 2 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
1 Bettys Bambino – Explosive win down the hill in last, wire to wire; loves Santa Anita grass and the hillside course.
4 Surfcoup – Leap of faith that Bob Baffert will have his ready; been away since July 2013, Baffert rarely runs short horses.
Long Shot – 6 Jules Journey
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Kafister – Returns in a no claim spot and with top rider Rafael Bejarano; David Bernstein doesn’t have many bullets to fire.
5 Senor Rain – Is a proven commodity here in Arcadia; has shown he can run well with or without the early lead.
Long Shot – 2 Awesome Indy
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $1 mile, Purse $45,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
1 Number Five – Steep class drop makes this one a must use in exotics; saves all the ground and should come grinding late.
6 Sir Macho – Got a feeling this Bill Spawr claim is ready to run a good race; hasn’t done a thing since claimed three races ago.
Long Shot – 3 Tosheen
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
7 Heat the Rocks – Have confidence that a second time out Jerry Hollendorfer will improve; chance in a wide open affair.
3 Niassa – Ran OK for third in career debut; Kathy Walsh doesn’t have much stock, but she surely knows how to train a race horse.
Long Shot -4 Patsy G and Me
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Trelawny – Should be able to contend on memory alone; was overmatched in last and still only lost by a length.
6 Greeley Awesome – Huge change since last is he’s a first time gelding; ran awful first race off the claim by Bill Spawr.
Long Shot – 2 Swift Eagle
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Bonus Spin – Gets class relief from a stakes race for this first level condition; sharp MSW win two races ago.
1 Steel Lady – Has shown marked improvement with each of her three career starts; moves from parking lot post 10 to the rail today.
Long Shot – 9 Seeking Shamrocks
Race 8 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Hollywood Royalty – The ones with experience don’t look like much; I’m using a couple of FTS who have something to prove.
9 Ina Mina – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to the bottom; this field isn’t much, so a repeat race gives him some chance.
Long Shot – 11 Key to the Gold
Best Bet – 6 Kafister (race 3)
Santa Anita Sunday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$31.60; Long Shots, 8/2/$22.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.60
Santa Anita Totals – 211/50/$306.40; Long Shots, 103/14/$184.40; Best Bets, 12/7/$27.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #3 Holiday Star (6/1) in race 8 at Keeneland. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Macagone ran second at Belmont Park paying $3.90 to place and $2.50 to show. Stats – 159/91/$845.60; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
