Horse racing: Today at Santa Anita Park, March 17
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $35,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds
4 Quintons Destiny – Best closer in the race is hoping for a speed duel between Jim’s No Preacher and Thinking of Girls.
1 Jim’s No Preacher – Joel Rosario must figure out a strategy with this speedball; can he be the speed of the speed today.
Long Shot – 5 Palio Prince
Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
3 Blu Jon – Tries dirt for the first time after two good turf sprints; has pedigree top and bottom for dirt, trains over it.
5 World Renowned – Uneven career so far punctuated by many gaps in training; key vote comes from Joel Rosario for John Sadler.
Long Shot – 4 Patriot’s Voyage
Race 3 – 7 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds
5 Pop the Cork – No barn is hotter than Doug O’Neill right now; this guy takes a big class drop and must be respected.
7 Tribal Dreams – Would be a toss after looking at his last two races; however Joel Rosario climbs aboard, a leap of faith.
Long Shot – 4 Yankee Dan
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), $100,000 Irish O’Brien, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
1 Unzip Me – If this race stays of turf, they’ll have to rundown this favorite; super consistent filly gets a new pilot, Mike Smith.
6 Halo Dolly – Was flattered when Chokecherymary won next out; like the turn back in distance from route to sprint.
Long Shot – 3 Advance Ticket
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
8 Barber Shop Rock – FTS from Bob Baffert barn; he’ll be in Arkansas probably with Secret Cirle in the Rebel at Oaklawn.
1 Innocent Man – Joel Rosario doesn’t ride much for Patrick Biancone, but when he does it usually counts.
Long Shot – 5 Craqui
Race 6 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
8 Visible Marq – Bob Baffert cull is dropping down the maiden claiming ladder; his race two back, if repeated, crushes these.
6 Swiss Game – For forgiving handicapper after a zero Beyer speed figure in last; key vote is Joel Rosario stays loyal.
Long Shot – 4 Call Me Jones
Race 7 – 6 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 4-year-olds
2 Mack’s Gold Bullet – Vann Belvoir keeps cooking this meet; Joel Rosario is on many live mounts, no shock if he wins 4 or 5 races.
1 Lana’s Smile – Did everything but win last time in a solid try; Santiago Reyes is going thru a cold spell which can happen.
Long Shot – 7 Jenna’s Lemon
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles, $300,000 Santa Margarita Invitational, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Ellafitz – Has won 4-of 5 races including 2 graded stakes; her front running style is aided somewhat by dirt versus synthetics.
5 Include Me Out – She is clearly improving race by race for Ron Ellis; broke thru last time with a sharp win in the La Canada.
Long Shot – 6 Awesomemundo
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
10 Dream Caught – This is a slowpoke group so his resume makes him stick out; the race will squarely come thru him.
7 Patriotic Lion – Speedball did everything but win last time in a best effort; 10-pound bugboy being asked to break and go.
Long Shot – 1 Run for Miles
Best Bet – 8 Visible Marq (race 6)
Santa Anita Park Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$15.80; Long Shots, 7/2/$25.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
