Horse racing: Today at Santa Anita, September 27
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
3 Wooram – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; like the Vann Belvoir barn, facing a modest group.
7 Condition – Flattered when chasing a next out winner in career debut; young horses typically will improve for good trainers.
Long Shot – 4 Guyfromtheskyfive
Race 2 – 7 furlongs, Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
1 Red N Black Attack – Ran a gutsy second last time out; like the cut back in distance where he could finish stronger tonight.
4 Sudden Rumor – Nice win under the tutelege of Philip D’Amato; he is one of the real good young trainers on the SoCal scene.
Long Shot – 9 Hidden Zensation
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $58,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
7 Bettys Bambino – Outside posts down the hillside turf course are a positive, not a negative; tactical speed to attack the pace early.
4 Heat Flash – Shortens up in distance, you know from reading these that I love that handicapping angle; will be flying late in the lane.
Long Shot – 5 Conquest Two Step
Race 4 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
9 Fame and Power – Bob Baffert is opening up the envelope for this meet; he didn’t show his strongest hand down at Del Mar.
11 Madiba – The team of Rafael Bejarano and Jerry Hollendorfer is always dangerous; parking lot post to stalk the early speed.
Long Shot – 2 Kantune
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Zenyatta, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Beholder – The Zenyatta goes thru her; the only horse that can beat her is herself if she shows signs of rust or isn’t tight enough.
2 Iotapa – She absolutely adores the Santa Anita oval; of course, it’s brand new El Segundo sand, so it is quite a bit different.
Long Shot -1 Tiz Midnight
Race 6 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Frontrunner, 2-year-olds
7 American Pharoah – His Del Mar Futurity win was one of the best 2-YO races we’ve seen all summer; going 2-turns and dirt are unknowns.
2 Lord Nelson – Bob Baffert has a strong uncoupled entry in here; this one was held out since a chalky debut MSW win at Del Mar.
Long Shot – 8 Conquest Panthera
Race 7 – 1 1/4 miles (turf), $300,000 Rodeo Drive, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Irish Mission – Among 3 east coast invaders attacking a weak west coast distaff turf division; from top trainer Christophe Clement.
13 Miss Serendipity – Will try to defend the honor of the West Coast turf distaffers; her Yellow Ribbon win was a thing of beauty.
Long Shot – 1 Cozze Up Lady
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles, $300,000 Awesome Again, 3-year-olds and up
4 Shared Belief – Amazing run of wins plus a weaking of the handicap division; his road is clear to win the Horse of the Year title.
1 Fed Biz – No more holding back for the Bob Baffert barn; these are the key races to get his troops ready for the Breeders’ Cup.
Long Shot – 6 Majestic Harbor
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), $75,000 Unzip Me, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Stars Above Me – Graham Motion has the confidence to ship her west after a trouble trip in last; uses a local rider in Elvis Trujillo.
4 On the Backstreets – She has won 3-of-4 down the hill so that speaks volumes; sight unseen since May, so at the minimum is fresh.
Long Shot – 3 Alexis Tangier
Race 10 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Chandelier, 2-year-olds
4 Angela Renee – Her Spinaway loss on paper looks ugly, 19 lengths; the track was soup that day and she can be forgiven for the loss.
2 Conquest Eclipse – Was highly regarded in debut MSW win at Churchill; was overlooked at 14/1 in the Debutante and ran very well.
Long Shot – 11 Majestic Presence
Race 11 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
7 Papacoolpapacool – Hasn’t gotten bet yet, but hasn’t run a bad race either; figures to be a short price exiting the Oak Tree Juvenile.
2 Nakamoto – Has shown steady improvement in all three career starts; big rider switch to Kent Desormeaux for the money shot.
Long Shot – 9 Dream It Do It
Best Bet – 4 Shared Belief (race 8)
Santa Anita Friday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$21.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$7.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.20
Santa Anita Totals – 16/4/$21.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$7.80; Best Bets, 1/1/$3.20
