Mayweather fails to make weight for fight, may pay penalty

Floyd Mayweather Jr. failed to make weight at today’s weigh-in at the MGM Grand Garden for his return to boxing Saturday. Mayweather, who is back after a 21-month absence to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, weighed in at 146 pounds, two over the agreed upon catch weight of 144 for their scheduled 12-round welterweight fight.

According to Richard Schaefer, chief operating officer of Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather has to pay a substantial per-pound penalty to Marquez, who weighed in at 142 pounds, two under the limit. Schaefer would not disclose how much Mayweather would have to pay and Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer said he did not know those particular terms of the contract.

Mayweather, who has not fought since Dec. 8, 2007 when he knocked out Ricky Hatton, is 39-0 with 25 KOs. he is being paid $10 million while Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs), will receive $2 million plus whatever penalties Mayweather pays Marquez.
